Very nice utility. Seems quite powerful and flexible. Renamed over 700 files in about 30 seconds, so I'm happy with the speed.

Downloaded from the new server location.
The app froze/beachballed when using the open menu dialog.

Hello!
The download site (and the email adress of the developer) is not valid anymore.
Any suggestions of an alternative adress?
Thanks!

This is a very comprehensive file renaming tool. It saved me a lot of time today and I would highly recommend it. I did not need to read the manual and was able to use it intuitively. However, I'm glad the manual is there if I need it.
Fails to rename files consistantly.

The interface is very nice. When I enter and change my criteria and THEN rename it does not completely rename all docs. It gets stuck "for some reason" with no error message. It renames a batch of files sometimes and doesn't rename all files at other times.

Possible to change the distribution filename to something more descriptive than LHA*.zip? Thanks.

I appreciate everyone's feedback on FileWrangler so far, even those who are less than impressed. I freely acknowledge that version 1.2 seems to have suffered from a slowdown over version 1.0 and 1.1. I made the switch to 10.4.1 and Xcode 2 with GCC 4.0 with this version, and it may be that I have something set incorrectly in the build phase. Additionally, my checks for RTFD documents and the hack necessary to only change the case of a name (the file system sees This and THIS as being the same name and doesn't rename anything) may also be slowing down things with this release. Getting the speed back to it's former glory is tops on the list for version 1.3. I may have overlooked something that is slowing things down.
In my testing, it takes me 30 seconds on a 1.5 GHz PowerBook G4 running 10.4.1 to rename 3,000 files. Version 1.0 did this same action in about 7 seconds, so something clearly happened (although it's still clearly faster than doing it by hand). I have heard rumors that G5s seem to really feel the slowdown even more, but have been unable to confirm this yet. Additionally, one user told me that the first time he ran his files through, it was super slow. But the SECOND time he ran his files through, it was super fast. Go figure.
Please email me directly if you have any time trials you wish to share. I will need your basic hardware configuration and OS version, as well as the number of files you were renaming and how long it took to do so.
Regex is becoming a more and more common request. I currently am working on implementing this for version 1.3, but it may be pushed back to 1.4 (personal time permitting).
Regarding the extension getting it's case changed, this is something that I hear back and forth on. Some were upset that FileWrangler DIDN'T change the case of the extension, and some now are upset at the reverse. Version 1.3 will include a preference setting for this matter, which will hopefully make everyone happy.
I also agree that a progress indicator is much needed and this will be included with version 1.3 as well.

Looks pretty nice so far. Can't beat the price, and it does come in handy for a couple of things. It really needs a progress meter though. I found it unbelievably slow (it took several minutes to rename 80 files -- I can do this with Perl in 10 seconds), and found myself wondering if it was even working at all. It did eventually finish though.
All I asked it to do was change the case of the words to Title Caps -- unfortunately it did this for the file extensions as well; why would anyone want the extensions' case changed? Now I have to fix all those.
Lack of regular expression support, no progress meter, and extremely slow speed make this pretty limited. Still waiting for a decent GUI-based file renamer on the Mac (A Better Finder Rename is quite flexible, but costs too much and its contextual menu approach is terrible). IMO you're much, much better off just learning to use Perl for command-line renaming.
