Would not run on Dual 2.5 G5, but does on Dual 800 G4 - Version: 1.03, 12/21/2005 09:13PM PST

Myst IV does not seem to support the newer GeForce 6800 GT in the dual 2.5Ghz G5. It crashes when trying to start a new game, as described below. It does work fine on my older Dual 800Mhz G4 system, with a GeForce2 card.

I've got what seems to be a reliable workaround for the crash when saving. After the save has completed, let the cursor fade out completely before moving it. Only then can you mouse over the buttons in the book mode. This fix works for me 100% of the time.
I've got another crash when viewing a large crystal in Spire. Solution is the same - let the cursor fade out completely before moving it.

I've tried the fixes listed on this site and have looked for support elsewhere, but I still cannot change the preferences in any sort of way or Myst will crash.
After changing the preferences and returning to the main menu, everything will work just fine until I try to mouseover one of the buttons on the book- this causes it to crash.
I am up to date and have changed the permissions as was suggested. I am running on a Powerbook G4 with a 1.33 Ghz and 512 MB of memory. Anyone have any suggestions?

Installation Advice - Version: 1.01, 12/25/2004 02:32PM PST

I installed this game inside "Applications", in a new folder called "Myst IV Revelation". I could not get the game to launch - it came up, displayed a big blue rectangle not taking up the full screen, then quit. I tried various "fixes" posted here and elsewhere, including fixing permissions - all to no avail.
On a hunch, I uninstalled the game, then re-installed it. This time, I simply accepted the installer's default location, inside "Applications" in a folder called Ubisoft".
It worked!
I'm now trying to learn the game interface, but the sound and graphics are amazing.
I'm running this under 10.3.5 on a Dual 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5.
Enjoy!

For those who can't even get the game start running... - Version: 1.01, 12/2/2004 01:17AM PST

It seems Myst IV has problems with macs or OS X.3.6 or me...
It doesn't run at all.
I'd like to think this as the first puzzle of this game...
To figure out a way to get it run...
(so I'm a spoiler?)
The problem is that the app's package isn't well packed, and the permission isn't set correctly...
So, go ahead grab batchmod...
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12057
open Myst4.app with batchmod, change the setting to (left to right):
check check check check check check check (no check) check
below the window:
apply setting to all enclosed item...
save the setting(you may need to enter your administrator's password), and quit batchmod...
Oh, I forgot...
you should also change the permission of the folder MystIV itself and all the enclosed items using the same method...
should you encounter problems changing permissions, login as root and try again...
******************************************************************
To login as root, launch Applications/Utilities/NetInfo Manager
Second column click users
third column click root
click the lock button at the lower left, enter password
In the big block at the lower half of the window, delete the value of the row where says passwd.
logout, login as root, password remain blank...
you might want to change the root password in system perference...
don't do anything else when you are logged in as root......
log out and log in as an normal user right after you have finished the work...
*******************************************************************
then, right click on Myst4.app, show package contents...
copy the following files within the folder into Myst4.app/contents/MacOS
libBinkMachO.dylib ares_config.xml myst4
I don't know if this step is necessary, but this way it looks nicer...
If you cannot take pictures nor save games, change the permission of /Applicaitons/Ubisoft/MystIV/save
allow yourselve to write in the folder...
After those, you should be able to double click the game and get it run...
Damn...

I just successfully upgraded my Revelation copy. BUT. For Ubi to stick a file called "vpd.properties" into my HOME DIRECTORY (and not even .vpd.properties -- YEESH!) is really, really stupid and lame. And it's going to drive me nuts. Grrr.. As for this installer being all done in Java, I think that's pretty cool. Probably they could make this work properly from Java if they put a little more work into it.

maybe it does work somehow, but after trying this "M4RPatchMAC_1.00_To_1.01.jar" (hmmm - nice name) for about ten times without success i just gave up.
