Republic - The Revolution ReviewGreat concept - Version: 1.0, 4/8/2005 12:20AM PST

...but as a PowerBook user I find my system strained to keep up with it.

I don't normally play games, but enjoy a good sim now and then. Republic is a great concept, and with the ongoing issues in the many former Soviet states like Kyrzygstan it remains timely.

But alas I can't say I love it. In fact, without the horsepower it needs I can't even say I've finished it. I've left my saved games in place and intend to get back to them, but I'll have to wait until I get a faster machine.

I hope the company reps read this and consider the possibility of a redesigned re-release with fewer features, blowing off the graphic glits and focusing on the core strategy which is the heart of the game.

This is a wonderful option for people like me who don't play many games but who do find sims and political strategy interesting. I recommend it with the caveats noted above, and in the hopes that the developer will consider bringing the game back to its roots as an interesting political simulation.

Republic - The Revolution ReviewBad on gameplay, bad on video cards - Version: 1.0, 11/3/2004 01:24PM PST

whoisgregg

If you are expecting Republic Revolution to be a unique and interesting game play experience, you may want to consider the following issues this game has:

The game is billed as a real time engine. However, each day is actually broken into three distinct 8 hour chunks with only one possible action possible during each 8 hour shift. If you leave the game at regular speed, you spend a huge amount of time watching the exact same boring movie for whatever action you choose.

The game clock can be accelerated to skip through the boring 'action' scenes. However, due to a bug in the game it is very easy to advance the clock past the "shift change" and causing the game to skip that turn so you get to watch another 8 hour shift of people walking down streets. After a couple times of skipping past, the game crash as it attempts to catch up.

There is an incompatibility with certain video cards. It causes all the people graphics in the game to be incredible screwed up. Game characters float around like they are on a crucifix and the lame 'action' scenes are even worse. The game manufacturer knew this when they made the game and instead of listing this problem on the box, you are only informed after installing the software. They blame Apple for the problem, yet other games can have skinned characters without trouble.

This video card issue affected me on my 12" powerbook and my G5 tower, so I guess it works on an iMac or eMac? Sorry, gave up on testing after realizing the game sucked.

Final Analysis: This could be a great game if they just made it a turn based game. It's got the fun elements of Chaos Overlord with a graphics engine that, if it worked, would be a joy to watch. With all it's other problems, the one thing I was very impressed with was the soundtrack. But it's just not worth playing the game to listen to the music. :(
