TextMate CommentaryTextMate works - Version: 1.5.9, 8/29/2009 11:59AM PST

Someone below says not as good as BBEdit, yet, and that might be true. This is still only version one but I have to say for web development I've found it great and perhaps even more functional/user friendly than BBEdit; I've been a longtime advocate of that app (BBE), in fact it was quite a wrench at first (when I realised how smooth TM was for HTML/CSS/PHP), I felt I was betraying the latter!

TM was has never crashed once, in over two years of using it.

TextMate CommentaryUpdate frequency - Version: 1.5.8, 4/8/2009 05:28AM PST

The developer apparently is receiving criticism from some users regarding the perceived slowness of updates, particularly regarding the lack of a split window, code completion, and chunk undo command (current undo acts on one character at a time). An TM v2 alpha is apparently under active development, with a beta release still some months out.

TextMate CommentaryPrice listed is wrong - Version: 1.5.8, 2/12/2009 03:52PM PST

The price on the buy it now page of the developer says ...

single user license (€39 ≈ $52)

So, it's 39 Euros ... $52 bucks!

I love the app, and will probably buy it ... but it's misleading to see the price listed in US Dollars and it's actually more expensive.

$52 for a text editor is kinda steep IMO. But it does work very good.

TextMate ReviewDoes not support essential encodings - Version: 1.5.7, 4/19/2008 03:23PM PST

TextMate supports only ISO-8859-1 encodings besides UTF, so it's unusable in most countries.

TextMate ReviewThis app has serious geek mojo. - Version: 1.5.6, 7/9/2007 04:53PM PST

The Unix-based concepts behind TextMate would seem to put it at the leading edge of text editing, where all manner of text manipulations occur with the magic of a few keystrokes (we don't need no stinkin' mouse). Lots of keystroke combinations to remember, but the time savings for those who use these shortcut assistants should be significant on a daily basis. Yet it's a big-picture coding/programming app that remains flexible and doesn't get bogged down by specialization. For those who appreciate this type of mindset, it's fabulous.

OTOH, it isn't as mature as BBEdit, which is expected, given the 7-version difference. BBEdit can validate html code site-wide, while TextEdit can validate only one file at a time (I'm still reading the manual to double-check this). BBEdit then can whisk you from the error list to the text in question, while in TextMate, you have to note the error line number in the validation window and then locate it in the file. That's a huge time saver in BBEdit on a web site consisting of a hundred text files or more. Also, BBEdit works well with DreamWeaver, for those of us who admit to using it, as I do, when push comes to shove.

But it's clear that TextMate has the structural underpinnings and focussed development to potentially leave everything else in the dust within a few versions. For those who jump on now, I think it's a wise investment.

c'mon developers - if you don't include a "what's new", there's no point releasing a new version! [again!]
