I agree, but as I mentioned in my original post, there are no firewalls involved here. This is a problem with Internet play on Homeworld 2 1.1.0. It works for LAN play, but not Internet play.

Fortunately, the problem has been fixed in Homeworld 2 1.1.1. After upgrading, I am now able to play multiplayer games on the Internet.

This is truly an excellent game. Thank you, Aspyr, for fixing the Internet play bug. I was ready to take an oath never to buy an Aspyr product again, but you have restored my faith!

Homeworld 2 Commentary9800 pro ME card troubles. - Version: 1.1.1, 11/1/2004 04:52PM PST

First: I love the game. Annoyance: I've got a new ART 9800 Pro Mac Edition (not SE) and when I run the game I"m told that "your card does not support multiple rendering contexts and shadows and high-quality hyperspace effects will be disabled."

That is nonsense, of course: the card does support multiple rendering contects...

That said, it's a beautiful game - it would just be more beaqutiful if it would recognize my expensive new card...

When having trouble connecting to a game on the internet when LAN connection is no problem, the issue is usually the firewall.

Make sure that the correct ports are open (Homeworld's docs will tell you which UDP ports to open in the firewall), and (especially if you are using Airport) NAT port forwarding is set correctly. Otherwise you'll have no chance of the other games to connect or the server connecting back to you.

Homeworld 2 Troubleshooting ReportInternet Multiplayer Games Won't Start - Version: 1.1.0, 10/18/2004 11:13PM PST

Has anyone been able to play an Internet multiplayer game of Homeworld 2? A friend and I have successfully played Homeworld 2 over a LAN, but when we attempt to play over the Internet, the "join" side always times out with the error message "Can't connect to host" and the "host" side just sits idle with no indication that anyone has attempted to connect.

We have also tried launching Internet games using GameRanger. This gives the same result ("join" side times out).

Both machines are PowerMac G4 1.42/DPs with direct (no firewall) broadband Internet connections. Other games such as Halo, Warcraft III, Age of Mythology, and many others work fine, so this looks like a Homeworld 2 issue to me.

The official word is;

"The problem is with your current video card, the 10.3.5 update ( and the drivers included in it ), and the flat screen monitor of the imac. The drivers for the fx 5200 alone have been reported to be faulty with our game and flat screen displays. Update to 10.3.6 when it is released shortly."

Looks like it could actually be a promising game. Might actually be fun. Sure is hard to tell when my BRAND NEW top of the line PowerBook runs it around 1 frame ever couple of seconds.

How could they release something this bad?

Due to a bug in Apple's nVidia drivers, those Macs using FX 5200 based cards (like the new G5 iMac) will not be able to play this game with adequate framerates. A fix is supposed to be coming with Mac OS X 10.3.6

I have a 20" iMac G5 and the game is unplayable. Even in the lowest video mode with a clean system running no other apps it almost freezes.

It looks like a great game, but until they patch it I will never find out.

I liked the demo very much, it reminded me a bit of Ares. Ship movement control is a bit different from both Blizzard and CnC, so it takes a bit getting used to, I guess.

Great eyecandy, even on this rather old G4 Ti Powerbook
