MassReplaceIt ReviewGreat Little App! - Version: 2.9.1, 2/28/2007 10:41PM PST

Was looking for something to search through all my documents and get rid of characters that my NAS backup drive didn't like. I gave up on Automator and tried Renamer4Mac, which was OK, but this seems better. First, it has a good clear preview option which allows you to selectively accept or reject changes. Second it has an undo in case you screw up. Third it's very fast on search. And last, you can set up multiple search criteria easily and save them as one search. (I think Renamer can do this too.) Very light help manual, but hey it's free!

Its interface takes a bit of getting used to in that it's not the most intuitive application and uses unorthodox terminology (i.e., "Mask" instead of "Filter"), but it is a handy little tool.

I did find one glitch, however, and that is that it doesn't know how to work with commas in filenames. At least, I couldn't get it to work. I don't know if there are any other characters that it can't handle, but I know commas don't work. So, I still had to go and make those edits, manually.

Because of that, I give it a less than perfect score and can't recommend it as a solution for someone that is looking for it to work as expected.

MassReplaceIt ReviewEffective - Version: 2.9.1, 9/21/2006 04:57PM PST

This specialized program does the trick very well. The ability to use regular expressions is a huge plus. I should say one can use it well for finds as well as find-and-replaces (just click "stop" after the "replace" shows which files would be affected). The author was also very responsive to a support/feature request I had.

MassReplaceIt ReviewDid exactly what I needed - Version: 2.9, 6/25/2006 06:24PM PST

stavia
MRI did exactly what I needed: change .JPG to .jpg in 3000+ among 8000+ files scattered at different levels through about 150 folders.

Surprisingly, the first few batch-rename apps I downloaded were not capable of doing this, at least not really easily right out of the box. And this one is free!

The only suggestion I'd make would be a progress bar or something. At least an indicator it's working. Just having the app be non-responsive made me think it had crashed.

MassReplaceIt ReviewExcellent, if you need it - Version: 2.9, 5/10/2006 08:28AM PST

<p>This product works as advertised, and solves a good problem. I had to do a mass replace through several thousand source files in a volume that also contained a lot of other files that couldn't be touched. This tool made easy work of it.</p>

<p>A few suggestions, however. Initially I thought the tool wouldn't work for me, as I am accustomed to having the options "RegEx", Match Whole Words, and Case Sensitive next to the Find and Replace fields. Although initially confusing, I did notice you could do it. on a different tab.</p>

<p>I am curious whether the tab panel is needed. Since the tab panel is only maybe 300x300 pixels, that would total a 600x600 window, which is a reasonable sized window nowadays (although I'd shoot for 600x400-450).</p>

<p>Keep up the excellent work. It's nice to know that there is a solution for this problem when I run across it.</p>

MassReplaceIt CommentaryVery Nice - Version: 2.9, 4/11/2006 01:43PM PST

old_mac
This is a nice utility. I would like to see a few additions however...

1. The program should show me the duplicate words, rather than just telling me.
2. In the Find/Replace window be able to sort on find or replace.
3. Save Queries in a plain text file format, not just in user/library/appsupport
4. Remove the 128 string limit
5. Be able to combine queries and automatically remove duplicates
6. Be able to split queries into smaller ones.

Hope this helps

Chris

MassReplaceIt ReviewIncredibly useful and effective tool - Version: 2.9, 3/20/2006 04:23AM PST

It does what it says it does, and it does it well. If you've got gobs of files that you need to rename, this is the tool for you. I haven't tried the contents-replacement or the regular expressions yet because I use BBEdit for that sort of thing, but if it's anything like the filename-changing, then I'm sure it will be great.

his tool is definitely the best for the job. i renamed thousands of mp3's with no hassle in blinding speed. my customized search includes at least 15 different attributes and they got replaced in just one run. besides the quality of the product the developer is supernice. it just can't be better. if you regulary use it please consider a donation because this app should really stay free for all...

MassReplaceIt Reviewwell done job! - Version: 2.8, 10/24/2005 09:10AM PST

This little software solved our big problem quite well: rename a lots of pdf's when moving them form a Mac OS 9 system to Mac OS X/Windows network. The task was to replace brackets and colons in file names with underlines in a SINGLE run. Worked fine in our hands!
What we missed was a clear statement in the "find" window if search is performed case-sensitive or not. So that you see it at the first glance what will happen - and some flags to control the search behaviour at this point in the menue.
What do you have to do if you want to search for digits only and replace them?

We recommend this software: it is helpful and well written!!!
