versions

The current version of WeatherDock, is 1.1, which is the second public release of the application. The most important reason of releasing this second version so quickly was to have a public version completely conform the weather.com® guidelines and rules. Now WeatherDock is a fully legitimate application. This means as of now I don't support the 1.0 version and don't condone the use of it. I therefore advise and ask all users of the current version to upgrade to the latest version.

Though this is second release within a week, don't hesitate to download it, since it's packed with a lot of new features. Next to that it addresses some of the issues users had with the first version.

What's new in this version:

  • Feels like temperature, available next to the current temperature (only displayed when it differs from the current temperature)
  • Humidity, in the current conditions as well as in the forecasts
  • Date/time format customization
  • Optional larger icon badge, for those with 40 icons in their dock
  • Optional Brushed metal interface
  • Speech customization, set the speech prefix text and select whether you want the location to be spoken
  • Editable favorite locations
  • Current conditions in the dock menu.
  • More locations can be added using weather.com locationID's.
  • Help documentation
  • Customizable notifications
  • Notifications
See the weatherdock homepage at weatherdock.alwintroost.nl for full information of the changes since 1.0.

WeatherDock ReviewGreat, but lacking in certain areas - Version: 2.5.1, 11/15/2009 11:25AM PST

I've chosen this over all the other menubar weather apps because it seems really stable and it's very customizable to get it how I like it to run for the most part (ironically, killing it from the Dock and have it only work in the menubar for one thing). But it's missing stars for lacking two things that would make me switch to another app if it had feature parity with WeatherDock plus one or both of these two options:

1) An option to show a local and/or state image of radar like the meteorologist app does
Here is an image of it in action here:
http://z.about.com/d/macs/1/0/M/4/-/-/meteorologist450x480.jpg

2) An option to show how many inches of snow accumulation is predicted instead of only saying "light snow", "heavy snow", etc.

If WeatherDock added these two things, I wouldn't be frustrated by having to go to actual weather sites with the Safari browser and could just rely on WeatherDock. While we're at it, another option to turn red or some other type of alert to show when there are severe weather alerts posted.

After suffering through Weatherpop and having Meteorologist begin locking up daily, I switched to WeatherDock to have weather in my menu bar. It seems to be more stable than either so far and has a more pleasing interface than Meteorologist. The menu icons are not ideal, though. They're designed for the full interface, either after you pull up the menu or you open the regular window. They lost a lot of detail and contrast in the menu bar.

A couple of suggestions for improvements. One is that there should be a variable refresh interval. The other programs have it. This seems to be refreshing once an hour, and that's way too seldom. Up to once every 15 minutes would be better. And right now, the days and nights in the menu blend together. It would be better to have alternating background colors for the rows, white for day and light gray for night. Just for the text, though. Leave the icon column with a white background so the icons don't need to be changed with transparency.
