Product Description:

Horizon is a BBC Model B emulator for Mac OS X.

Horizon (formerly MacBeebEm) was one of the first emulators available for Macintosh. Despite this, it has fairly good compatibility with original BBC software, allowing you to play titles such as Elite without problems. The Mac OS X version adds an improved GUI and significantly improved sound to the original version.

Horizon was initially developed for classic MacOS and Windows by Chris Lam. While the source code for Horizon is not available, the toolkit used to develop the Macintosh port will be available in the longer term from my developer pages. Certain portions are available now, and more will be added in the future.

What's new in this version:

  • Audio recording no longer stops when emulator is switched to background, provided that the option to keep emulating in background is on. Recording will still stop if the emulator does.
  • Brushed metal mode is now off by default on new installs, as well as existing installs where users press the Default button.
  • Fixed an obscure endian bug that resulted in odd window sizes when an emulator preferences file was moved between PowerPC and Intel.
  • Fixed several minor visual glitches in the Preferences dialog box.
  • Modified the behaviour of the Quick Freeze function, so that the last ten quick freezes for each game are kept in ~/Library/Application Support/Bannister/(emulator name)/Saved States. You can restore these at any time using the Defrost menu command. Added code to stop the quick freeze and quick defrost keys from being repeated. Thanks to David McCabe for the suggestion.
  • Replaced custom about box with standard HIAboutBox. Removed option to pause execution when about box is open.
  • Fixed bug whereby dropping file into Horizon window would cause an assertion failure.

This emulator does the job reasonably well and appears to be capable of running most BBC software. Some games fail to run (including some that I'm fairly sure run on earlier versions of this emulator), and I have been unsuccesful in getting sideways ROMS to work (Beeb terminology) but it runs Elite and other classics just fine. Would like to see support for the BBC+, Master 128, etc. but in general this is a polished and clean emulator. Preparing Beeb software for execution can be a pain and the supplied tools require the use of Classic. Would be nice if those, essentially command-line, tools could be recompiled for Mac OS X or even be made redundant by performing the tasks they do within Horizon itself. Despite that, for Beeb nostaligics with Macs, this is essential software!
