World of Where CommentaryStatistics not shown in version 3.8 - Version: 3.8, 8/15/2007 08:54AM PST

The latest version does not show statistics for countries (area, population, GDP etc.). The previous versions used to show these statistics upon hovering the cursor upon the countries. This fact that this feature has been removed has not been mentioned in the list of changes for this version. Though it is a good program, i am sad to see a useful feature be removed. I wonder whether it is a bug which might be corrected or a deliberate change.

Also, i agree with another reviewer that the color of countries should be made to change in every test. After multiple tests you subconsciously start relating country with their colors.

Another problem is in the flag tests when you get the answer wrong, the font color of the country simply changes color to red. The correct answer is not otherwise displayed anywhere. So in a test with many countries on the map after some time it becomes difficult to figure out which name just turned red. If the name was popped up or something then it would be easier to spot, but simply changing the font color when you have many other 'red' countries makes it very hard to spot in maps with numerous countries.

World of Where CommentaryMoving to an Intel Mac broke WOW for me - Version: 3.7.3, 3/7/2007 05:46AM PST

Very strange...now when I take a test, clicking on states or countries, gives me an error result...whether I click on the correct object or not. Hawaii seems to be one of the few states that WOW knows where it is.

World of Where ReviewGreat app! Very minor drawbacks, but much room for improvement! - Version: 3.7.3, 3/6/2007 09:31AM PST

This is so great! I really want to buy it, but I'm totally poor right now. Next paycheck, though!

A couple things.

1) This would take much more programming, and I'm not even sure it's possible, but if the maps were able to randomize colors, that would be great. I found myself, on the third time through the Europe test, saying, "Oh, Albania is the teal one." If I didn't have that crutch, that would be great. Also,

2) The custom tests allow you to uncheck items you don't want to be tested on. But you can't be tested on those custom tests. For example, in Europe, the custom test function allows you to uncheck anything you don't want to be tested on. So in the European Union countries, you can deselect any country. This is a cool feature. But it would be much more useful if THAT were the test. In other words, that should be a custom test in itself: just EU countries.

Still, this is an excellent app. We've all seen footage of Americans that are embarassingly bad at geography. This is a great solution.

If only there were an app that was general world knowlege, i.e., What language is spoken in the Phillippines?

But thank you for this app!

World of Where ReviewGreat idea, well executed. - Version: 3.7.2, 2/13/2007 11:47AM PST

I don't recall the specific percentage, but a surprising number of American high school students couldn't locate Canada on a world map. My knowledge of world geography wouldn't have been very flattering to me either, so I was happy to see an app like this appear. After testing every day I have at least a general idea of the layout of the middle east, Europe, Asia, etc. Even this basic knowledge makes world affairs and news much more comprehensible. We should all try to get as much perspective as possible on matters of history, geography and politics. This is a step in the right direction I think.

World of Where Commentarygo to preferences first - Version: 3.5, 4/5/2006 08:55PM PST

I just discovered that the best way to approach this app is to enable "toolbar on" in the preferences. This will give you all the necessary options at the top of the window. the skip feature in particular is helpful for tests as it allows you to "practice" (though really it is a test) because it shows you where the answer is.

note to developer: this setting should be default.

World of Where Troubleshooting Reportone bug - Version: 3.5, 4/5/2006 08:45PM PST

sometimes the country title at the top of the flag window does not correspond with the country. I have seen this occur several times and it is a bug that therefore requires fixing. in the middle east, for example, i click on syria and then another country and syria remains the name at the top of the flag window.

minor thing but since there is no really good practice feature here, i rely on the flag window to tell me the correct country name.

World of Where Reviewpromising but still needs work - Version: 3.5, 4/4/2006 04:49PM PST

Good show. I am not perturbed by the clicking flaw. What I dislike most, rather, is the inability to get hints--this is compounded by the fact that the continents pose too great a challenge to practice in a single sitting. How about dividing the continents up by regions: north south east and west? then practice those sections, then offer tests for them --with the option for hints when stuck?

Also, when you do click on a flag children need the option to hear the country's name said aloud--some cannot read well or at all depending on the age. But it would be a great addition to their education is this were available.

So: hints, smaller regions, and voice-enable would make this a highly saleable educational product.

World of Where ReviewA solid all round application - Version: 3.0.4, 11/2/2005 06:55AM PST

This product certainly has a weakness, expressed by other users, regarding test answers not registering your selection correctly. This, in my opinion, is a generally minor flaw.

All together it is a very good application - providing an enjoyable way of learning geography on a Macintosh.
