Ultralingua Spanish-English Translation Dictionary ReviewWorks great - worth every penny - Version: 7.1.4, 10/23/2009 07:27PM PST

Mark Heyer
Spending a month in a Spanish immersion program in Peru, I downloaded the Ultralingua app for the iPod and was so impressed that I downloaded the laptop version as well. I use both constantly - they are the only programs I have found that can keep up with my needs in one-on-one training sessions. The software is incredibly well designed and the interface is superb. As you type a search term, not only does it update the search as you type, but it comes up with very helpful "see also" and "did you mean" suggestions in case your spelling gets off track. Switching back and forth from English to Spanish and from dictionary to conjugations is instant and flawless. One example: Search on an English word and see the Spanish definitions. Right-click on one of those words and it instantly opens in the dictionary or the conjugator. Forward and back buttons let you track back through your searches like they were web pages. Finally, the widget which lets you highlight a word in **any application**, hit a hot key and get a popup definition is worth the price of admission. At least ten times faster than any other method I have found.

A first rate product all the way around. This short review only reveals the tip of this program's capabilities, which include excellent spoken responses and many other features.

If it included an internal phrase translator, (Google is included) I would happily pay $40 more, but as it is, worth every penny.

Ultralingua Spanish-English Translation Dictionary Reviewgood companion to learning - Version: 6.0, 11/13/2006 01:23PM PST

I have been using Ultralingua along with a Spanish learning software (that lacks its own dictionary) for a month. It is completely satisfactory-- handier than the free online dictionaries -- it is worth its cost. Its window can float in front, and I tuck it into the corner of the screen, always ready to use. Results of searches are a good balance of info and brevity. The widget doesn't work at this time but is supposed to be fixed soon, according to prompt support response.

Ultralingua Spanish-English Translation Dictionary Usage TipAdding entries to Ultralingua - Version: 5.11, 7/28/2005 11:38AM PST

In my review yesterday I bemoaned the lack of a feature in Ultralingua that allowed the user to input new entries. I got a reply from Ultralingua's support letting me know that Ultralingua 5.11 DOES have that feature. Great support and quick response time from this company. Another reason to recommend their stuff.

Here's what they said: "We do have data entry available in our programs. On the Mac, there should be a button called "Add Entry" under one of the menu options. It is new for the Mac version so it may not be on your current version of the English-Spanish dictionary. You may update to version 5.1.1 if you would like if you can't find the "Add Entry" option on your current version."
