Product Description:
The Ultralingua French-English / English-French Dictionary dictionary is a professional grade dictionary for use in education, translation, and business. It includes over 250,000 indexed entries, including thousands of technical and colloquial terms, idiomatic expressions, and more. Useful for reading, writing and translating. Version 5.0 adds vastly enhanced databases, stemming (recognition of conjugated and other inflected forms) for most languages, a special mini-mode (to take up less room on the desktop), seamless interaction with other applications, and much, much more! Features include: Automatic verb conjugation; PowerSearch mode, with wildcards; Multilingual interface; Customizable: user may add entries; Drag & Drop with other apps; Direct interaction with OS X services enable applications via keyboard shortcut; Number-to-text converter; History feature; Automatic translation of blocks of text (via the Web); Search for examples of usage (via the Web). I, and many others, have left feedback on older versions. Alas, it has disappeared? Versiontracker, where is it?
Version 6 appears to be a minor upgrade. Alas, the dictionaries have not improved significantly. UL seems to emphasize compactness. In an era of 500GB harddrives, this emphasis makes no sense!
The gold standard, Robert Collins is so superior that a comparison is useless. Currently, I am considering investing in Parallels for the sole purpose of having access to the RC dictionary on Windows.
In addition to UL's unwillingness to include a truly comprehensive dictionary, they employ a nasty practice on upgrades. Previewing version 6 is a one-way street. It completely wipes out your version 5 install with no way to recover. They do not warn you of this practice. I was fortunate enough not to have any customized libraries. However, if I did, this would be a disaster.

What do you think of a version 6 that is unable to import language dictionaries from version 5 ? I performed the automatic upgrade and now my Ultralingua is dead.
Note that version 6 (from the About dialogue) is in fact a version 5.20d4 as shown by the Finder. A "d" version, not even a beta version !!!
