Echelon CommentaryDo not treat him this way! That is wrong too! - Version: 1.1, 3/12/2005 07:11PM PST

i red a lot of these posts about the dev and how dam'n trashed his app now is or should be, but i think that this hole thing got so big, he couldn't have been thinking of that, he just acted. he acted for good and understandable reasons - jeah an crossed a line. now the hole web community pull out their toungths to give him hell. ok, and now stop one moment and think a few seconds before acting nearly as stupid! in my opinion, he learned his lesson and now let him try to be better then this. every one schould give him a chance now to proof that this was a mistake - and i think of it like, a mistake of whitch evey one laughes about in 10-20 years. as i did somthing wrong in my youth, got couth by the police and was brought back home by 'em. i got hell from my parents and neighbours but i got a chance to proof that i had learned my lesson, the dev has his too. i think he is more sensible where the line is, than any other of you, now! give him a chance and get over this mistake - no one is this perfect to throw stones at him!

You're in luck then, since it's no longer available! Echelon is no more. Happy? Now quit yer *censored*in' over some lousy pirates' misfortune.

Echelon ReviewNot worth the risk of erasing your important data. - Version: 1.1, 10/6/2004 09:21AM PST

roobieroo
Sorry but erasing user data is not the way to handle pirated software. I don't care if it has been disabled, there is no action this guy could take that would make me want to even demo any software he could possibly come up with.

Echelon CommentaryToo bad for Indie software - Version: 1.1, 9/13/2004 05:29PM PST

(0 of 1 users found this comment useful)

Travoltus
The reputation of indie software for Windows is already damaged by the fact that Windows is unstable. **But Open Source Software won't take any kind of hit from this as long as everyone points out that this stuff came with no source code.**

This is why Open Source Software is the best choice: it's instantly and fixable. Bugs are quickly discovered and squashed. If Echelon were OSS it would have been de-trapped in a heartbeat.

Do you know how much noise your little hissy fit has caused? Independent developers and open source products have been inching their way into mainstream society, becoming more and more trusted. Even casual computer users have begun realizing that their fellow man cares more about their productivity than huge faceless corporations. Small businesses and international conglomerates alike were beginning to adopt indie software solutions instead of costlier big brother products. Developers just like you were becoming the ever more appealing answer to keeping down the all mighty TCO.

And now you've ruined it for everybody.

Who can trust indie software now? Your selfishness will send shockwaves through the entire planet and will delay the technological revolution.

I hope that for every file you are responsible for deleting, you have one day of unemployment. You can be sure that your fellow developers will be experiencing the very same woes.

Echelon CommentaryDoesn't matter anymore... - Version: 1.1, 9/13/2004 03:02PM PST

It doesn't matter anymore, as Echelon is dead, and VT just hasn't taken down the site yet. I defended Echelon, as I personally know the dev, and hate to see the mess this has stirred up. I gave it a 5-star review because it is (was) great software, that does what it says, and does it well, with a great interface. Echelon has been perfect for me, and so much better than what was currently available. I didn't give the 5-star review arbitrarily; it was truly deserved. Too bad the stupid copy protection scandal overshadowed this very useful and unique software. No point reminiscing though, it's dead and gone now...

Echelon Commentary"Feedback"... - Version: 1.1, 9/13/2004 11:34AM PST

aamann
how is one supposed to believe all the glowing feedbacks if about all the five star reviews come from the developer(s) themselves?? Just take a quick look at the feedback histories of "Wise_Weasel (WiseWeasel's Crackden)", "MacTheRipper (GeezerButtz Software)", "lemon2k" - all of them say sooner or later in either their "reviews" or commentaries that they are part of this operation...

Doesn't convince me and makes for a very bad reputation...

(I won't even try to balance the user rating by giving a low rating, I would have to post way too many reviews for that...)

Echelon Commentarysorry, no way. - Version: 1.1, 9/13/2004 11:18AM PST

would i ever even consider trying a demo by this author. if he HAD code in to do something destructive like that what's to say that it is stable and bug free? ok. he turned it off (for now). maybe he'll turn it back on one day. maybe he'll slip up and it'll be re-enabled one day. maybe it has a bug and goes off after 90 days regardless if you registered or not. saying "only pirates have something to worry about" is foolish.

i'm all for authors protecting their work, but when they do things like this they've crossed the line. i could never recommend ANY software this author helped develop. if someone did this in a corporation they'd be subject to criminal charges.

Echelon CommentaryIncredibly unbelievable - Version: 1.1, 9/13/2004 11:10AM PST

"This boneheaded move completely backfired on him, but it's no reason to toss this app in the trash"

I strongly disagree. Anyone asinine enough to even try something like this will have NO chance in hell of EVER getting me to even think about using one of his apps. Not only that, but I will make sure to blast this guy everytime I hear someone asking me about software in this genre. Utterly reprehensible.

Echelon CommentaryRe: What You Said... - Version: 1.1, 9/10/2004 06:56PM PST

Well, the dev was sane enough to realize his mistake pretty quickly, and the code in question wasn't online for very long. His user base wasn't affected by this. The people who were affected most likely weren't going to buy it anyways. Regardless, no innocents were harmed in this fiasco. When you pirate an app made by independent developers (especially budding ones as in this case), you're literally taking his bread away. This guy needs all the support he can get, and has put almost a year's worth of effort into getting Echelon to this point. This boneheaded move completely backfired on him, but it's no reason to toss this app in the trash, as it's still extremely useful for those that do these types of video conversion.
