Avenir CommentaryAvenir is now StoryMill - Version: 2.3.7, 1/18/2008 12:00AM PST

Avenir is no more and has been reborn as StoryMill, from Mariner Software (the makers of MacJournal, Montage and Mariner Write). It’s the same app, but with a few tweaks and a whole new timeline feature. There’s a small update fee for Avenir users. See http://www.marinersoftware.com/sitepage.php?page=127.

Avenir ReviewThis App is Fabulous - Version: 2.3.7, 11/2/2007 09:21PM PST

I have been using this app for months since I switched from the PC world. I does everything (and more) that my equivalent PC apps. I runs very smooth on Leopard, and I can honestly say I have not found a glitch yet. Hats off to the developer!

Stop reading user comments and try it, you'll be hooked.

Avenir ReviewOne of a much needed generation of applications - Version: 2.3.5, 7/1/2007 02:37AM PST

Avenir is one of a much needed generation of applications. Try Jer's Novel Writer for an alternative approach to the same problem. Both apps deliver on their pro?mise — to be a writer's tool, rather than a nagging proof-reader who keeps on looking over your shoulder while you are still doing the creative work.

Avenir and its ilk offer a variety of writer-specific tools such as databases and annotations, and these are very welcome. However, its real power and importance is the ability to handle very long documents.

This is where Microsoft Word proves to be entirely unsuitable. Not that I'm knocking Word — it satisfies a very large number of wordprocessing requirements, and writing novels is probably not one of the most frequently demanded. However, if you want to write creatively, you need Avenir, or Jer's Novel Writer, or Ulysses, or something like them.

That's it really. App works well, is stable, gets updated reasonably frequently. What more can you ask for?

Avenir ReviewPowerful, simple, focused - Version: 2.3, 12/5/2006 11:03AM PST

Avenir is simple, easy-to-use, and gets out of the way of writing. It includes excellent tools for organizing writing projects, with enough flexibility to adapt to a range of project types, but without an excess of rarefied features likely to confuse rather than aid writers.

I started with Avenir 2.2 and moved to Avenir 2.3 Beta, and have written a complete novel. When it was time to send it off to my agent, the export to .DOC format (as required by my publisher) was fast and seemless.

I managed characters, scenes, locations, notes and To Do lists with ease right within the Avenir file. It was fast, easy, and let me do the most important thing: write.

For me, it really lacks is internal version management, but I understand that's on the table for a future version. It's already great, and based upon the approach of the developer, it will only get better.

Humbug ! Just another organiser for computer people. Unless you like to write in a little box try Manuscript for prose, (this one actually is familiar to a writer). For scripts its still worth forking out for Final Draft.

I have been using and testing Avenir since February. Purchased it about a month ago. This app was mature back in February, and is simply outstanding today.

The developer is extremely responsive and welcoming of suggestions, criticisms, and bug reports.

You can't go wrong with this application.

Avenir Troubleshooting ReportWeird full screen mode - Version: 2.2.6, 5/9/2005 02:15PM PST

I have not yet purchased this app. It seems like a very well thought out piece of software for writers. I have a dual monitor setup, using OSX Tiger. When I place the Chapter window on a separate monito in Full Screen mode, click back on the Main window on the other monitor, then go back to the Chapter, the text zooms up. Do it again, it zooms again. Four clicks, and I have text that is so large, it barely fits one sentence on the screen (the text rewraps to accomodate). ten clicks, I have a billboard. Of course, if I exit Full Screen, everything goes back to normal...until I repeat the procedure. I have dual monitors for a reason...I like to work that way. So, if that is a problem, it is a deal breaker for me. There doesn't seem to be any way around this (other than to stay out of Full Screen mode, which I happen to like).

Avenir ReviewBetter and better - Version: 2.2, 4/5/2005 05:45AM PST

The developer is responsive in improving his software and the current 2.2 version shows this. Avenir runs better and is more flexible as well. Personally, I like this user interface more than Stickybrain for just writing. It is simple, easy to figure out, uses little memory and helps specifically in organizing creative writing projects. Though "CopyWrite" -- another good effort at creating a writing tool -- might be better for technical writing, this application is more for novels, plays and musicals. This application is good and will only get better (IMHO).

In the "Scene" part of Avenir, when I put in copy and then try to make part of it bold or italic, ALL of the copy is affected and not just the part that is high-lighted. This bug needs a fix.
