Product Description:

Skype is the next phenomenon from the people who brought you KaZaA. Just like KaZaA, Skype uses P2P (peer-to-peer) technology to connect you to other users – not to share files this time, but to talk and chat with your friends.

The technology is extremely advanced – but super simple to use... You’ll be making free phone calls to your friends in no time!

What's new in this version:

  • improvement: CPU Usage in Video calls is reduced.
  • improvement: a sound is played when a call is initiated
  • bugfix: Canada was not in the list of countries in call preferences and SkypeOut dialler
  • bugfix: advanced option "Keep call windows in front" didn't work when "Dock call windows to Skype main window" was enabled
  • bugfix: the text in the SkypeOut dialler is now "Type number in (country)", instead of "Type (country) number"
  • bugfix: sometimes Skype crashed after adding or removing a contact
  • improvement: new notification CallConnecting - plays nice sound when you start calling someone
  • improvement: added Show call technical info to advanced prefs and respective floating utility panel
  • improvement: minor layout fixes in the history window
  • improvement: added "Remove from Contacts" command into the main menu
  • improvement: SkypeOut dialler window remembers its size and position
  • bugfix: "resume" button was clickable when a video call was held remotely
  • bugfix: renamed "send im" to "start chat..." in the context menus of conference call participants
  • bugfix: "More" button in call window was in a wrong position in non-video builds
  • bugfix: results of contact list filtering were not updated after a new contact was added
  • bugfix: Mac: automatic launch setting not honoured
  • improvement: pressing "arrow up" key in the contact list while the topmost contact is selected, will bring focus to the address bar
  • bugfix: there was some flickering when a call window was created
  • bugfix: advanced preferences "Keep call windows in front" and "Dock call windows to Skype main window" were conflicting
  • improvement: tab key switches focus between address bar and contact list
  • improvement: pressing "arrow down" key in the address bar will select the first contact in the contact list
  • improvement: previous text in the address bar will be preselected when focus returns there
  • improvement: previous text in the address bar will be preselected when main window regains focus
  • improvement: support mp3 sounds in events notification (may not work on 10.3.9)
  • improvement: added WebHistory to chat, visited external URL's are now colored red with small check mark
  • improvement: pop-up button with country prefixes will be hidden in the SkypeOut caller window if a valid phone number with international code is entered into the phone number field
  • improvement: added a button to clear the phone number field in the SkypeOut caller
  • improvement: improved handling of some country prefixes starting with +1 (like Virgin Islands)
  • bugfix: was unable to import phone numbers from AB and probably also from other sources
  • bugfix: 'Call' in chat drawer item context meny localized incorrectly

Skype ReviewWarning! - Version: 2.8.0.722, 11/29/2009 01:05PM PST

I installed this version of Skype on my MacBook (10.6.2) and Skype will not even boot up. Hopefully I can go back to the earlier version.

I certainly don't recommend this version for 10.6.2

Skype Reviewversion 2.7.0.330 still the best for me - Version: 2.8.0.722, 9/21/2009 02:07PM PST

I've tried the new version 2.8.0.722, but my experience wasn't too good.

The new interface is more like the windows version, crunched with things. Some people like it, I rather the clean style (like in Mac-Gnome).

But what made me return to the previous version I had installed was the quality. Sound and video were quite terrible. I tried deleting preferences and fix permissions but it didn't do any good.

For me (Macbook pro1,1, OS 10.5.8 at test-time and 10.6.1 now) Skype version 2.7.0.330 is the one that works the best so far.
