I used to like this app, but it now appears to force you to subscribe to the developers own feed. Not the kind of feature worth upgrading for!

NewsFire ReviewNetNewsWire - Version: 1.6 (v81), 8/2/2009 10:58AM PST

MAC_1984
Sporadic development meaning the developer gets around to revisions on his own sweet time. The latest removed more features that it added. NetNewsWire is vastly superior is every way.

Avoid David Watanabe products at all costs. Because it will cost you, and more than just the shareware fee.

NewsFire is dead as a duck anyway, which is business-as-usual for Watanabe: steal code, slap a UI on it, sell it at 2 x the going rate, promise bug fixes, don't deliver (due to the stolen code either not being fixed or having its license adjusted to prevent it being stolen), discontinue product without publicizing as such, so that any poor sap who stumbles over it and doesn't know better will hand over money for a dead, abandoned product.

NewsFire Usage TipTargeted Feeds - Version: 1.5 (v74), 9/29/2008 01:18AM PST

heyjed_dotmac
Although the current version no longer has a wizard for creating user selected topics it is still very easy to create a custom RSS feed about any topic you want.
If for example you want to create a custom feed for news about cats from Google you would create a new feed and enter:
" http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&q=cats&ie=UTF-8&output=atom " (do not enter quotes) and name it Cats (or whatever you want)

or if you wanted to find out current news about the All Blacks on Yahoo you would enter:
" http://news.search.yahoo.com/news/rss?p=All%20Blacks&ei=UTF-8 " name it and you are away.

These are in essence searches conducted every time the feed updates but very handy nevertheless. The only drawback is some times for searches with multiple terms a random article that has them in it will show up but overall a really hand feature and a reason I enjoy using Newsfire.

Used this app for over a year and contacted the developer over 5 times regarding an issue that prevented the app from working. I bought the damn thing and could not get this guy to respond. Emailed him the receipt to prove it and still not a word. I switched to NetNewsWire and never looked back. Much better app. Lousy customer service catches up with you dude!

For superior support, and constant revisions, an excellent replacement for NewsFire is NetNewsWire.
