Product Description:

iChat2Cell is a utility that will simplify sending SMS messages through iChat. With the current way iChat allows you to send SMS messages to cellular phones, you have to first bring up a new invitation window (because Address Book doesn't save cell numbers as buddies), then you have to enter the country code and "+" and then you can finally send the message. With iChat2Cell, we take care of all those steps with one simple application. With your donation to If Then Software, we will send a code to unlock the built-in address book (you can even import your cell numbers from the Mac OS X address book) which makes it even easier to keep track and send SMS messages to your favorite cellular users — all through iChat!

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.3

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.3 or higher
  • iChat AV (due to limitations with the AOL network SMS can only be sent to +1 country code cellular numbers)

iChat2Cell Commentary never had a problem until I installed this program - Version: 1.01, 8/31/2004 08:23AM PST

Laquidara
Good news: It works great, and really keeps you in touch and always accessible.
Bad news: It always keeps you in touch and accessible.

Once I bought this program, I found that everyone was text-messaging me all the time (When my computer is turned off, my normal Instant Messaging iChat NEVER TURNS ME TOTALLY OFF. Example: When I shut down the computer, iChat shows a telephone-icon that allows people to IM me anyway!)
I e-mailed several times for iChat2Cell support, and was told that the best way to solve the problem is to pay the few xtra bucks a month to the cellphone company to have text messages be free.
Problem is, I don't want to be getting text messages all day long on my cell phone, and there doesn't seem to be any practical way to close the floodgates.

iChat2Cell Developer NoteWe are working on sorting the address book... - Version: 1.01, 8/29/2004 02:11PM PST

The importing of the Mac OS X address book is still a new feature; we are still working on sorting it before it gets to iChat2Cell. Again, (as read in the Read Me that comes with the software) iChat *can* do what iChat2Cell does, but, until iChat makes it easier to store these addresses as buddies, iChat2Cell may be of help to you. We are trying to automate the process a bit more, that's all.

iChat2Cell ReviewThe start of... well, something - Version: 1.01, 8/29/2004 12:19PM PST

Impressive Girth
Before iCHat2Cell:

Launch ichat. Select new chat with person or simply hit SHIFT+APPLE+N. Enter +1 and the number you wish to send an SMS to. Enter message and send.

After iCHat2 Cell:

(And after donating a few bucks to unlock the import feature) Launch ichat. Launch iChat2Cell. Scroll through a non-alphabetized and seemingly random list of numbers to get the contact you want. (No way to type the first few letters of a name, etc.) Find the contact you wish to IM (you have to wait a few seconds for the address book to load before you can do this). Enter message and hit send.

You decide which is easier.
