FastMailBase ReviewTemperamental Product - Version: 1.14, 4/30/2008 05:44PM PST

This product has to be coaxed to work and is very poorly supported. I have used it since June 2006. It has always made me nervous in operation. It is very flaky. It gives a reminder that an update is available every time it is opened, but it is the same version number dating back years. So far it has not lost data but I am surprised that it has not, because it keeps freezing during a backup. It seems to pick up from where it left off after restarting. I frequently have trouble getting the database to open. Sometimes repairing permissions seems to work. Sometimes the database will reopen after several attempts. Upon start-up it always tells me it cannot identify a database. I have to manually go find it and click on it to open it. All that said - it does work and is easy to search through once you have got the database open. However, I cannot recommend it. It is just too inconsistent and temperamental. Very overpriced.

FastMailBase Review$97??? What are they smoking? - Version: 1.14, 6/1/2006 04:36PM PST

For an app that does nothing else but archiving email FastMailBase is priced outrageously expensive. Compare what you can get for $97: the complete iLife package, or iWorks. Or almost Word or Excel in their standalone version. I’d register this for $25... and not a penny more. Will stick to EntourageEmailArchiver (EEA X) instead. That one’s been reliable, affordable, and good for years with almost the same set of features.

FastMailBase ReviewI like it - Version: 1.14, 3/24/2006 01:19PM PST

I find it hard to understand all the one star ratings for this program. While FastMailBase may not have the flashiest graphics, it does a very good job at archiving your mail - and allowing you to quickly and reliably find mail items afterwards.

I like the fact that you can have it archive messages on startup, as well as deleting the message from Mail after archiving. I also like the MIME message handling and ability to show graphical attachments. It is always easy to see which messages have attachments and to view them. Searching on various parameters is easy to do and very fast to complete.

Downsides are that it keeps claiming a newer version exists (it doesn't), and the price - which is on the high side. It can take a little while to import messages, but let it churn away and it will complete (I imported around 1,000 messages from Mail without any issues).

I recommend taking a look at the program and checking out its functionality. It really offers all that you could reasonably look for, and offers a good way to stop Mail choking on old messages and their attachments.
