Product Description:

It appears only natural to assume that as our ears pick up sound waves, they convert them into electrical nerve signals that represent the sounds, a loud sound producing a large nerve signal, silence producing no nerve signal at all, and once these nerve signals arrive at the brain we hear them as sounds.

However, our auditory system is not that simple. The electrical signals that travel from the ear to the brain are not an electrical representation of audio waves. The signals passing to the brain when there are no sounds are as strong as the signals produced by loud sounds.

Before the electrical signals from the ears are passed to that portion of the brain that hears the sounds, they pass through neural networks that act as filters. These filters are part of the subconscious part of the brain, and are closely connected with the part of the brain that controls emotions and the automatic response of the body to danger.

Experience continuously alters these neural networks, changing which signals are enhanced, which are attenuated, and which totally suppressed, before the signals are presented to the cerebral cortex to be perceived a sounds. Essentially, these neural networks try to pass sounds on a "need to hear" basis.

Think of how we detect the sound of our own name, a distant car horn, or a new baby stirring in its sleep, whereas we may be unaware of the sound of the blood rushing through our arteries, rain pounding on the roof, or traffic noises from a nearby street.

Signals that are new, or associated with a negative experiences, are enhanced to alert the body to prepare for "fight or flight." Interesting enough, signals that are recognised as representing a known danger evoke a weaker reaction of the autonomic system than those categorised as an unknown danger. Signals that are recognised as having occurred before, and which not being associated with positive or negative events, evoke the least reaction.

This process is called habituation. The Tinnitus Tamer uses sequences of special sounds and silent periods. When you listen to these sounds they retrain the neural networks in your brain by first weakening, and then eliminating the positive feedback that creates the Tinnitus.

Thus, the Tinnitus Tamer uses the resources of your own body to take care of the Tinnitus in a natural way.

What's new in this version:

    1. The tone mode selection interface has been improved. There is no longer a basic and advanced tone control mode. The tone modes are now controlled by three buttons only.
    2. Added a feature to allow skipping one or two frequencies in any session. The skipping of a frequency is selected with the tone mode button for the frequency to be skipped. This allows the creation of training session of only those frequencies, which are most effective for a Tinnitus sufferer.
    3. The square tone session button, which were previously numbered 1 to 9, have now a long rectangular shape. The button contain descriptive titles, which can be edited by the user. To edit the titles, option-click in the space to the right of the buttons, or select File > Change Session Button Names...
    4. The session duration can now be set individually for each session. When saved, the duration will be remembered for each training session.
    5. The session duration of a training session can be set from 0.05 to 30 minutes. You change the session duration by option-clicking on the session time, or by selecting File > Change Duration of Training Session...
    6. Added a feature, which allows users to set the duration of any training session to exact multiples of the tone sequences.
    7. All above features are available when creating sound files. This makes it possible to save only one training session in a sound file, which results in a very small sound file. This small file can then be played in repeat mode on an iPod or any other sound software, which has a repeat mode.
    8. Added a Save Alert when you quit the Tinnitus Tamer, and there are unsaved changes in the last tone mode used.
    9. All controls and displays used during playback are now located together in the lower right side of the main window.
    10. When saving a sound file, the file name suggested is now the button title of the session being saved.
    11. Some minor bug fixes and interface improvements.

I have followed all of the instructions and guidance for this application. Nothing! No results! Nada! Now, the developer wants me to pay for a new version because I have 10.6 running when his app is 32 bit anyway. No need to update unless you feel generous. It works fine in version 3.0.6 So, what I would like to see is some INDEPENDENT verifiable third party (got it yet?) that this application actually works. I mean really. I have 747 loud tinnitus and this application is worthless. It is, by far, the worst money I have ever spent for an application. Would I recommend this application? NOT ON YOUR LIFE!!!

Bottom line for some of us suffering from tinnitus...it works! If you don't actually suffer from tinnitus - - why are you even commenting about this application? Go find your own illness software to critique. Pimple Popper or Noob Neutralizer or Microcephaly Mender or whatever.
