Product Description:

Flesh is a freeware Java application designed to quickly analyze a document and display the difficulty associated with comprehending it.

After processing a document, Flesh produces two scores: the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level and the Flesch Reading Ease Score. Each of these scores is calculated after determining the number of sentences, words and syllables a document contains. Using those numbers, the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level and Flesch Reading Ease Score can then be calculated.

What's new in this version:

  • Ability to process Micosoft Word docs, PDFs, and HTML files in addition to plain text and rich text files
  • Re-written GUI has a cleaner appearance and better integrates with OS X
  • Over twice as fast on long text files
  • Improved accuracy
  • Flesh is now open source

Flesh ReviewThis is neat. - Version: 1.5, 5/19/2005 06:26PM PST

"Flesh" will not make you into a good writer, but it will warn you if your work is liable to miss its target audience by being pitched at either a too high, or too low reading age. There was something like this on one of the word processors on the Amiga and I have missed it for years. I hope the author continues to work on this one, because "Flesh" is good stuff.

Some avenues to evolve would be to expand the number of file formats that the program accesses, specifically adding "Microsoft Word Document" (whatever that happens to be this week) since this is probably the most common file form for writing at present. This program would also benefit from being able to run as a plugin for MS Word so that it could be invoked from within the Word interface. Failing that, as a plugin for one of the many good free word processors around like say, ABIWORD.

If you write, "Flesh" is good stuff.

The results from this tool make much more sense than what MS Word spits out. Simple and easy to use interface. It even tells you the number of syllables in a word unlike MS Word. I have enjoyed using it.
