iCuistot ReviewIncludes nutritional database — sort of (Review and product comparison) - Version: 1.1, 4/25/2006 09:26AM PST

Good:

  • Includes large database of nutrition information
  • Individual serve scaling
  • Automated filtering and smart groups

Bad:

  • Ingredients don't seem to be linked to the nutritional database! (Am I missing something?)
  • Runs slowly
  • No shopping list
  • No weekly meal planner

The programs I tested, roughly in order of preference were:

  1. Connoisseur 1.1.7 (great interface)
  2. A Cook's Books 0.9.19 (feature rich)
  3. Shop'NCook 3.1 (includes nutritional database)
  4. Organized Gourmet 1.2 (calendar based meal planning)
  5. MacGourmet 1.1.7 (attractive interface, includes wine notes)
  6. iCuistot 1.1.1 (includes nutritional database — sort of)
  7. Kitchen 1.0 (simple interface)
  8. Yum 0.7.8 (simple recipe manager)
  9. Measuring Cup 1.1.1 (simple interface)
  10. CookWare Deluxe 2.1 (includes a very basic meal planner)
  11. The Computer Cookbook 3.1

Note: There are many others that I didn't test at all because they looked less promising, based on their descriptions and other people's reviews. There is one commercial product (TheRecipeManager) I refuse to test because of the developer's crazy policy of buy before you try. While I have tried to give a fair and honest appraisal of each product, I don't pretend that each review is exhaustive or totally without error. If I have overlooked any feature, it's possibly an indication that the feature was difficult to find or unintuitive to use.

No customer support, no toll free number to contact for help, No response to emails sent asking for assistance. Program crashed twice (fatally) and i had to start completely over. Cannot handle large recipe files, I have 90 cookbooks in Mastercook containing about 20,000 recipes. It does fine until you get about 5,000 recipes then it becomes painfully slow and eventually crashed and corrupts the database. You must delete the libraries and start over. I wanted a program to replace my Mastercook 8.0 so i wouldnt have to use Virtual PC, and i thought I had found the answer, but it cant handle 1/4 of the recipes Mastercook can. Developer should warn buyers of the limitations regarding database size. I guess i am just out 29.00 and will stick with MasteCook until someone created it's Mac counterpart.

iCuistot Troubleshooting ReportMultiple pages of recipes? - Version: 1.1, 10/22/2004 03:23PM PST

I just download this -- it looks great, but when I have lengthy recipes with a lot of instructions, it gets truncated at the end of the only page in the Theme. Is there really no way to make multi-page recipes?
