You may not have realized that Mac OS X already provides a full-featured command-line tool to create disk images, called hdiutil.
/usr/bin/hdiutil create -srcfolder inFolder outImage.dmg
will do the same thing, won't leave visible temp files around in the destination directory (unlike this tool), and even has a man page.
