iPodBackup Troubleshooting ReportWhen using an iPod formatted for use with Windows (FAT32) - Version: 1.5.4, 3/20/2006 01:31PM PST

ovvldc
Remember that the FAT32 file system, which is needed if you want to use your iPod with Windows, does not support file sizes over 4 GB.

This means that you cannot put big user folders into a disk image. You can always put them on your iPod as a folder.

If you have a lot of stuff in your user folder and want to use a disk image (for the encryption or something), you might want to drop some or all of your Movies folder, because these tend to grow really big really fast and are often easiest to replace per MB. Or you can put them on a seperate CD/DVD for archiving.

iPodBackup ReviewExcellent app, just the right size for me - Version: 1.5.4, 2/9/2006 02:55AM PST

iPodbackup is just the right size application for non intrusive backup routine, on a device which you'll mount regularly anyway (to recharge and download podcasts to your iPod).

I wrote a little howto/review and a tip about compacting of the backup images, you can read it here:

This little tool does just what it says it does, and it does it well and reliably. The information on the developer's website was very helpful when I did have questions and concerns.

iPodBackup Reviewgreat little script - Version: 1.5.1, 6/5/2005 10:56AM PST

once set up, this provides me with something great: peace of mind. At the end of a work session (at home, where I sometimes do freelance work) I run the script and know I can't lose the work I have just completed - everything is there. I know there are more professional solutions, but this is low maintenance and free!

iPodBackup ReviewSeems to be Fine for Lightweight Use - Version: 1.4, 2/17/2005 09:33PM PST

Not for non-geeks although author provides some assistance on writing rules on his site. I have more than 40GB (entire music directory excluded) in my /Users/username directory. I selectively backup parts of it to .Mac with Backup and run daily incremental backups with Retrospect and CCC.

For someone with a home directory that's relatively small I can see this working quite well. It doesn't have the ease of use of Backup in picking and choosing what to backup. For those without portable small FW drives in the 80GB range or larger FW drives on the desktop this clearly provides some serious advantages and is worth taking a look.

iPodBackup ReviewGreat product, and getting better - Version: 1.4, 2/15/2005 08:22PM PST

The product works great and is getting easier to customize. I have an iPod Photo, and with just a little effort was able to exclude the photos in my backup, since they are already on my iPod. Works great every time!

iPodBackup Reviewgive the author a break - it fills a need and does it well! - Version: 1.3.2, 2/2/2005 02:36PM PST

Agreed, editing the preferences file isn't for basic user. You need to read (and understand!) the rSync man pages. Even then, I found that I needed to experiment many times before I got the rules to work as I wanted.

But - this FREE program fills a need and once you get through the setup it does it well. I used to synchronize my critical documents manually to my iPod. Now it happens automatically (with the help of PeripheralVision to auto-launch iPodBackup).

iPodBackup ReviewGood idea - Bad performance - Version: 1.3.2, 1/30/2005 02:55PM PST

This "program" sucks. It not only didn’t backup my home folder but also screwed my iPod so that somehow iTunes thought the iPod was full.

The usage is also poor. Editing pref. texts is not exactly what I would call user covenient.

Perhaps the developers might want to put more effort into that before offering a Catalan localization.

I've been using this great piece of software for 2 weeks and I cannot live without it.

Is awesome and works fine. In spanish from v1.3 and licensed under GPL is the only missed add I needed and from this version is perfect.

While backing up users to the 20 gig ipod, after cancelling out Itunes music, it acted like it was backing up to the system too, the HD on my powerbook went from 15 Gig, to 0. I stopped it, and looked for a extra user throughout the HD to no avail, found the library logs preference and trashed that but didn't help. Wondered if any ideas how my 15 gigs disappeared. Also nothing showed up on the ipod window, but found the users through the computer when clicked on ipod. Trashed the users from the ipod and didn't seem to affect anything.

Thanks Printerguy
