Product Description:

iPodBackup is a shell script-turned-application (via Platypus) that backs up your home folder to your iPod using the open source backup utility rsync. Combine it with Do Something When to have fully automated incremental backups to your iPod, for free!

You can customize a list of items to be excluded by simply dragging-and-dropping them onto the app. By default, the Music folder, as well as certain cache folders are skipped, in order to prevent duplicating your music and because caches are a kind of stupid thing to backup.

Please see the iPodBackup info page for more usage info, as well as a detailed guide describing how I made the app.

A note for first-time users: The first backup can take quite a while, especially if you use an encrypted disk image! Subsequent backups will be much faster, as only files that have changed will be copied over.

What's new in this version:

  • Growl notification support
  • Better handling of disk image mounting problems

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.3.9
  • Mac OS X 10.3
  • Mac OS X 10.2

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.2 or higher

iPodBackup Troubleshooting ReportWhen using an iPod formatted for use with Windows (FAT32) - Version: 1.5.4, 3/20/2006 01:31PM PST

ovvldc
Remember that the FAT32 file system, which is needed if you want to use your iPod with Windows, does not support file sizes over 4 GB.

This means that you cannot put big user folders into a disk image. You can always put them on your iPod as a folder.

If you have a lot of stuff in your user folder and want to use a disk image (for the encryption or something), you might want to drop some or all of your Movies folder, because these tend to grow really big really fast and are often easiest to replace per MB. Or you can put them on a seperate CD/DVD for archiving.

iPodBackup ReviewExcellent app, just the right size for me - Version: 1.5.4, 2/9/2006 02:55AM PST

iPodbackup is just the right size application for non intrusive backup routine, on a device which you'll mount regularly anyway (to recharge and download podcasts to your iPod).

I wrote a little howto/review and a tip about compacting of the backup images, you can read it here:

This little tool does just what it says it does, and it does it well and reliably. The information on the developer's website was very helpful when I did have questions and concerns.
