Product Description:

StockXloader is a native Mac OS X application for fully automated downloading of stock market quotes and indexes to the technical analysis program ProTA or ProTA Gold from BeeSoft (http://beesoft.net) — effectively building an arbitrarily large database of tickers containing historical quotes for the open/high/low/close of each day!

It collects quotes from:

  • the archives at Yahoo! Finance for any stock exchange in the world;
  • the archive at Affärsvärlden (a Swedish business magazine) carrying quotes and many indexes for the Stockholm Stock Exchange.

The downloaded information is automatically imported into the database of ProTA. In the process, it informs ProTA which tickers are stocks, which are mutual funds, and which are indexes so that any new ticker is put into the right category by ProTA.

You can try out a full and completely uncrippled version of StockXloader for evaluation up to 60 days — try before you buy! Read more about StockXloader on the product page.

Features of StockXloader include:

  • The system treats daily quotes and historical daily quotes of stocks, mutual funds and indexes.
    • For a list of Yahoo tickers, you can download historical quotes for all those tickers many years back in time! And you can also download all the quotes for today, even if there are hundreds of tickers!
    • For Affärsvärlden, you download quotes for the whole Stockholm Stock Exchange for any number of days or weeks or months back in time!
  • For Yahoo, StockXloader keeps three separate lists — "EU", "US" and "A" — that you can fill with arbitrarily many tickers from any stock exchange in the world. Keeping two lists makes it possible to optimize each behavior and differentiate regions of stock exchanges.
  • For non-US quotes, Yahoo enforces a restriction as to the amount of data that can be fetched in each "batch" — a maximum of 200 days per download. However, StockXloader has the ability to work around that limitation by automatically and seamlessly dividing it all up into as many periods as is necessary!
  • For downloading a set of quotes for today from Yahoo, they enforce a restriction as to the number of tickers — a maximum of 200 tickers per "batch" download. However, StockXloader has the ability to work around that limitation by automatically and seamlessly dividing it all up into as many chunks as is necessary!
  • For both Affärsvärlden and Yahoo, where the latter is further separated into EU, US and A, StockXloader keeps track of the last date you successfully downloaded data (really got some data, not just attempted a download!). All this information is kept visually updated in a live table so you immediately know the status.
  • For all dates of last download, you can back any of them as much as you need — days, months, years — for building a historical database!
  • StockXloader provides you with very detailed progress information concerning how the download and conversion proceeds, what is currently being processed, missing dates, empty tickers, error conditions etcetera.
  • For Yahoo historical quotes, StockXloader warns you about those tickers that do not have any data or do not have as recent quotes as the most recent ticker has.
  • After all the files have been downloaded, they are processed to fit the import specifications for ProTA and the character set used in Mac OS X. The resulting information is assembled into a single file to be automatically imported into the database of ProTA.
  • It verifies fields to find out what the latest date is where you really got some data, and all dates are converted into a format that is independent of your preferred date format in ProTA. The format is also independent of your chosen decimal separator (period or comma).
  • For historical Yahoo quotes, the full security names, obtained from the ticker files, are inserted into a column of the file to import into ProTA so that when ProTA shall create new symbols, it will automatically get the full security names.

What's new in this version:

  • StockXloader now has three Yahoo ticker lists: In addition to the previous (EU) and (US) lists, there is now also a list for "region" (A), which works just like the (EU) list, but the letter (A) can be thought of as representing, or matching other regions or keywords such as: Asia, Australia, Americas, Alternate, Additional, ...
  • You can enter a 'full security name' of your choice in the Yahoo ticker lists — StockXloader will now pick that name and insert it into a column of the file to import into ProTA; the effect is that when ProTA shall create new symbols, it will automatically get the full security names so you get these proper names into the database without having to enter each name in a dialog! This will make it MUCH easier to get going with StockXloader + ProTA!
  • En new help file: 'Yahoo Ticker-list Guide' is now available in the Tools menu. It describes the rules and has a number of example tickers for different regions of the world.
  • StockXloader will now convert all dates in the downloaded files into a form that is independent of your preferred date format in ProTA.
  • An additional Preferences installer is provided: it can install an adapted preferences file for ProTA that includes quote import format settings for making a robust identification of columns completely automatic. For first-time users of StockXloader, this makes it MUCH easier to get started, since it eliminates the need to manually set all these things! Read more about this in the User Guide, Chapter 5.
  • If the Notes file or any of the Yahoo ticker files are deleted or renamed, StockXloader will now recreate new fresh templates as soon as you choose that item in the Tools menu, or restart StockXloader.
  • Updated User Guide with many more clarifications.

StockXloader ReviewJust works - Version: 3.3.4, 10/28/2007 04:03PM PST

Stumbled on this AppleScript based program after finding ProTA for technical analysis. This worked really well in combo with ProTA for my level of need. Although individual stock entry process by manual entry in both StockXloader and ProTA is somewhat tedious, but it's well worth the routine given the data feed is free, and covers more international data than some paid subscription service. I highly recommend this program and ProTA if your technical analysis need goes no finer than 20mins delayed daily time scale.

One word of warning though. The current 3.3.4 version is incompatible with Mac OS X 10.5 as noted by the author. An updated version will be introduced at some point in the future. Fingers crossed and maybe some urging would help this process along.
