Product Description:

Aquamacs is a Mac-like distribution of the powerful Emacs text editor. It looks and behaves like a Mac program - even though it's still GNU Emacs with all the extensibility that millions have come to appreciate.

Emacs is a text editor of legendary power and configurability, but it also has an enormously complex interface. Aquamacs tames the Emacs tiger: you get Apple shortcuts (in addition to the Emacs ones), nice fonts, one file per window (if wanted), international input methods, Apple Help manuals and more. Aquamacs comes with a range of modes for various markup and programming languages: HTML, C/C++, Java, Python, Perl, AppleScript, Tcl, XML, R (S)... These modes have extra functions for the languages, including excellent syntax highlighting. You can even use Aquamacs to read news and e-mail, just like any Emacs.

What's new in this version:

For (stable release) Version 0.9.6: (download below)
  • Aquamacs now provides extended input methods for Korean, Japanese and Chinese (GB/BIG5). You can select them in the Options menu, under "Aquamacs Multilingual Environment" / "Set Language Environment" - everything is integrated with Mule. In order to load more fixed-width fonts suitable for use with Asian languages, you may want to load the carbon-font package.
  • Bug-fixes with CSS mode, two-screen setups, osx-key-mode-map (key binding redefinitions), "font-lock-keywords" (when loading new files), and hanging-on-quit

The beta-release 0.9.7beta is available for download here and offers substantial improvements. New functions: Mac-style printing, Export to PDF and HTML, Spelling suggestions, New buffer in mode / change major mode menus, a context menu (right mouse click), speed improvements, nXML and AUCTeX included text display improved (international characters and proportional fonts), "wrong command-p" bug fixed and much more.

Please report bugs only on the aquamacs-bugs mailing list.

Aquamacs Emacs CommentaryLatest release: 1.9 now available - Version: 2.0preview2, 10/8/2009 11:58AM PST

This is only a preview release of the upcoming 2.x series.

As a stable, reliable editor suitable for everyday use, I would recommend Aquamacs 1.9 which has just been released and will see maintenance in the near future.

A highly recommendable Mac implementation of Emacs.
Even RMS would approve of it now ;-)

I've reinstalled my MacBook (10.5.6): Aquamacs doesn't quit.
It normally runs, but I have to "force quit" for quitting the appl: very strange!
