browserTunes ReviewDeserves a higher rating. - Version: 0.2.2b, 3/31/2005 04:26PM PST

Here's the scenario: you have your trusty desktop pumping music out through the house speakers (airport express, long cables, or whatever). You are in another room with either a laptop (Mac or PC) or WiFi-enabled Palm such as the Tungsten C. If you want to be able to search your music library, change volume, skip songs, or switch playlists through a lightweight browser, this app is PERFECT! Seriously, it deserves a higher score. Start iTunes, start BrowserTunes, set a couple preferences and you are in business.

As a bonus, you can use this to control iTunes from work if you have a shoutcast server running.

The download link is broken. I already informed the author. In the meantime, a quick Google search will find you a copy somewhere on the internet. The only glitch I've found is that it can occasionally hang if you switch to the "Library" playlist if you have a huge collection. The Search feature works very well and is certainly my favorite feature.

Hey, you can't beat the price, either!

I actually found this while looking at what the iTunes remote options are for my wife when I, and my Salling Clicker-enabled phone, are nowhere to be found. After playing with more than a few remotes, I think this is the best of the bunch. I agree that having a way for the client to log off would be nice, and I really think the equalizer should have a presence (though I guess I could set equalizer presets in the ID3 tags... but I'm not sure many people would think of that). A sliding scale, or a pulldown menu, for the volume would also be nice so you have an idea as to what the present volume level is at, though it isn't pressing. Also not pressing, but would be nice, is a way for the end user to customize the graphics in the "Fancy" view. Good job! I look forward to checking out future releases

browserTunes ReviewInteresting start - Version: 0.2.1b, 10/3/2004 05:23AM PST

great idea and needed. definitely off to a very good start. the presentation in HTML is really nice, and although i haven't tried it, the PDA interface could be very useful also. but a number of problems and areas for improvement. first of all, does not handle very large itunes files very well. seems to have a limit in fact of around 32K songs (like the old versions of iTunes). docs are mostly lacking, and there are many unexplained prefs. (most people won't understand what SQL is supposed to do, for example, and simply how to address the server (ie http://localurl:port#) not explained (i don't think). unclear how often the library has to be updated (why not use apple events to get playlist names, and then update library on a definable schedule for searching?) the interface is not standard. (default buttons are in flat grey not blue). there should be a way to disconnect client side (lags on itunes server side freeze up safari on client side). "fancy" interface would be nice customizable.

And an obvious idea for an app. Everything seems to work with the exception of search and loading the library. Crashes the server app. This might have something to do with my large library. over 20,000 songs. I'll definitely keep coming back for more as this progresses.

browserTunes CommentaryLittle Bugs - Version: 0.1.8b, 8/23/2004 01:16PM PST

Requesting full Library "playlist" freezes up the server.
Multiple quick requests does as well (such as volume)
Track search by artist won't work for me. By name will.

I've already implemented this product on my webcam site and I let viewers DJ my music. Very nice idea! The complex "fancy" view still works strangely so I'm sticking to plain for now. Many requests, such as with controlling volume crashes the server.

But I like it!

For an early beta this is a great start. It provides a functionality many of us can use -- and it works now! It will only get better.

Needs some real work before becoming stable. The Graphics look good (when they decide to load up). If they take their time and code up with a decent release, this could be the next big 'little' app. but needs some fundementals sorted before releasing next beta.

This app has some nice potential.
It is still clearly beta however.

The graphic mode indeed only works with Safari, which shouldn't even be an issue if they would just use standard HTML like good web-dev monkeys.

The playlist button will only show your playlists when a song is currently playing. Makes it hard to start iTunes remotely to get it to that state. Hopefully will be fixed soon.

So far only has play/pause, next, previous, and playlist, all function except the later as noted above.

The listen port is now in the settings so can be changed as needed.
There is no authentication however so beware of unnice people on your network finding this.

I'm not going to give any rankings on this version, as its still labeled as beta.
I hope they continue to develop this app however.
