What's wrong with Spotlight? - Version: 2.5.1, 7/21/2008 02:17PM PST

With Leopards improvements and a current model laptop, I can bring spotlight up (apple+space) and as soon as i type the beginning of an app name it comes to the top and highlights itself, literally instantly. The enter key then opens it. I realize that this Namely only searches applications, but I don't see why anyone would want a faster search than spotlight. It's literally instantaneous for me.

Leoqp. has much improved the speed of Spotl., but Namely finds ONLY apps, so is fast, and LEARNS, so is that much faster for commonly used apps. Butler is very good, but doesn't always find what I want - Namely always does.
What about Spotlight? - Version: 2.5.1, 11/20/2007 02:59PM PST

I haven't tried this program because it appears that Spotlight (built into OS X) does the same thing. If you want to open an application, for example, Photo Booth, just hit Command+Space bar (which opens Spotlight), then type "photo booth" and hit Enter. That's it! Photo Booth opens. No need for this program... IMO.

Well, that's what I thought when I saw this little app: Why would I need this? I have a dock! I know where my Apps are ....
Doh!
This clever little thing is far smarter than me .... I now use it constantly, instead of loading rarely-used programs into the dock (a far slimmer dock looks good - now to try the same thing on me!) ....
Namely ... in a word: "brilliant" ..!

Does one thing, does it well. It's free and easy. It deserves a cooler name though, one that tells more clearly what the app does, something, like Zaplaunch, Keylaunch, or Qi Launch, Qwiklaunch, PsychicLaunch or something which flatters it, as the title "Namely" is so plain it understates the convenience of having this app. People who want more than this app offers, can dig in and figure out how to configure Butler or go even further with Quicksilver, but those who prefer simplicity will love this faultless app launcher that requires no configuring.
In my case, under two seconds, just three strokes and my app is up. One key to open "Namely," two keys to indicate which app I want, like the letters "Ad" then all my Adobe apps are in the selection list, and my Adobe Photoshop, being opened more frequently, has migrated to the top of the list, as Namely remembers the frequency of your calling up apps, and the app at the top requires a simple "Return," to open it, no need to even arrow or key to it. Love it!
I have Mac Os X, PPC 167 17"

I tried Namely on a flier, and it was the best decision I ever made. I'd seen blurbs on launchers, but couldn't figure out why I needed such a thing with the Dock. But since I installed Namely, I've found I simply can't get along without it.
This little gem does only one thing, but does it flawlessly. I switch programs many times a day at work (a weekly newspaper), and it is simply indispensable as a time-saving measure. If it wasn't free, I'd urge you to buy it today. Since it IS free, however, you really need to get this on all your Macs ASAP.
Only one addition I'd like to see: An option for automatically rebuilding the app list on restart.
