youPod ReviewIt simply works - Version: 1.2.1, 5/18/2005 10:26AM PST

i am using youpod for a few months on several machines and i have NEVER lost any data on target computers. So what's all this about ? This software simply works...
I only wish a better docu, there were a few points i could not understand from the docs alone. But AIM based support really works fine. And the amount of data which is stored on my 30 GB Pod is acceptable ...
Try it and use it. I think it is worth the fee

youPod ReviewThis product will overwrite the other Mac it is used on. - Version: 1.2.1, 5/5/2005 07:53PM PST

Not important
Great concept, good documentation and simple operation... it's just too bad the software SUCKS!!! After watching their interactive QuickTime instructional video and following the directions the application over-wrote the favorites file for Internet Explorer on a different Mac with my favorites file when the application was run. Major malfunction and can cost you to lose everything in your iCal, Address Book, Mail, iTunes and favorties for Safari, Explorer and FireFox if it operates as it did. DO NOT USE THIS PROGRAM, IT DOES NOT WORK!

Tell me what's wrong with this product?!

It works so well, so what's wrong with it?!

Seriously. I downloaded it today, used it and worked exactly as predicted. So pleas ladies and gentlemen here, WHAT IS WRONG?

I can only recommend it. But even with that, try it first. Maybe some systems are prone to failures with youPod…

My Shuffle started dumping songs from my play list because this program started eating all of my space! What the author calls a PROPPER shut down does not exist anymore since 90% of my player is filled with youPod data.
Author hasn't responded to my request for help. This Is Not Worth Trying AT ALL!!
THE LATEST VERSION 1.2.1 DOES NOT ACCEPT MY 1.2 SERIAL NUMBER.

YOU FR!GG!N RIP-OFF CREEPS

It doesn't take a much to see how defensive RnSK is about this 'product' he's offered up. If only he took as long to answer questions, problems, and complaints as he did composing his 'explanation' (as patronizing as it was). Patronizing point #5 - "5. The iPod is not a "Walkman" its a Hard Drive or..." No kidding??!! Look moron, while you sit on your make believe high thrown calling yourself "Ronin" the rest of us _DO_ have a clue. Your program is cr@p. Our collective knowledge is higher than your make belive supreme ability... and believe us; Your program DOES NOT WORK as it was intended.
In fact it is truely broken and harmful to both the 'away' computer and the iPod. Each time I run your program on my iPod from my Home computer it adds over 200MB of data to my iPod. Considering I only have 1.5MB of Bookmarks and Addresses I find this amazing! Within 6 consecutive uses of your 'program' it had consumed over a Gig of my iPods storage space and took over 30 minutes to shut down correctly. From what I understand in your feeble instruction manual, not allowing it to shut down correctly can cause damage?
Leave it to the readers to try this? Or pull your cr@p from the shelf before more people are left with big problems! How dare you ask people to try this damage-ware when you know perfectly well that it is harmful and you know that you never respond to email requests for help.
Do the abject requirement for a disgraced Ronin and stick a knife in your pathetic malicious code.

I'm not quite certain what the point of the two rants are. Virtally any decent backup or sync applocation can do all the things you say can't be done. Are you referring to copying the Keychain in the Finder or what?

I set up a quick little set in Retrospect 6 that went to ~/Library and quickly backed up apploication support, caches, Safari, and keychain, something like 36MB in less than a minute. ALL priveledges were maintained. I backed them up to a "set" (single file) but could have chosen a duplicate just as well which would have made all files available in the Finder.

(Fortunately my iPod Photo 60 had plenty of room at the time.). I routinely backp iCal and Address Book with iSync (which also backs them up to .Mac). I do the same with text documents.

There are many iPod backup apps out there which do the same things listed above although I doubt they assure that correction permissions are applied and likely some don't verify the backup, i.e., double check each file has been copied consecutive. On the whole I think Retrospect 6 (Desktop version in my case) did a creditable job of backing up 36 MB in less than a minute, veerifying it and making sure permissions were correct.

And the backup was incremental meaning the backup on the pod will change as the original on the Mac changes. What exactly is your complaint?

1. youPod does NOT copy Safari bookmarks to an away machine.

See for yourself: On the away machine, in the Finder, go to the Library Folder, then Activate Safari bookmarks with youPod. You'll notice that an alias/link is made, not a copy.

There is no code in youPod to copy your Safari bookmarks to the away machine...so leaving a copy of them at the Apple Store or anywhere else is pretty hard to do, as when you take your iPod away, the files it that were linked to it go with you...by design.

This is the case with Addressbooks, Calendars, etc. The only bookmarks that are copied are from Explorer, as outlined in the youPod manual. When youPod is allowed to *quit cleanly* its cleanup code erases the Explorer bookmarks; it does not put them into the trash.

2. Keychains are not copied to the Away machine; the OS doesn't allow it.

See for yourself: in Library/Keychains, check the modification date of the keychain file, then activate Keychains via youPod.

youPod must use the OS Keychain services to use your keychain on the iPod...which is exactly what it does. When you take your iPod away, the keychain goes with it.

3. The Mail fuction is listed as *experimental*. Don't use it if you aren't comfortable with using features labeled as such.

4. youPod does not write any playlist information to the iTunesDB or to the iTunes XML file on any machine.

5. The iPod is not a "Walkman" its a Hard Drive or flash disk with a music interface. Yanking the iPod dispite Finder/OS/App warnings is just like yanking any other removable volume.

In short, try youPod for yourself. If you have any questions or concerns, call or write to us about them. We answer all polite email, and most rude email as well.

Thanks!

Read the first feedback on this one - the one with 5 Stars? If only that poor tool knew that when he plugged his iPod with this installed on it into that Mac at the Apple store; He Left a Copy of his bookmarks on that Mac for all the world to see.
I've had problems with this for 2 weeks now and have had NO HELP from the hacks that slopped this together. All of my bookmarks are still gone, as is my money.
Again - the first reviewer? Obviously either Kai or Chris or one of their lacky hacks. He wrote this:
"By the way - the new 'youMusic' feature makes managing and using YOUR music so much easier, it's a great addition."
WTF - Are You On Crack??!! This 'feature' only servers to turn my iPod into a portable harddrive - ALL OF YOUR PLAYLISTS ARE RENDERED UNUSABLE ON THE IPOD IF YOU USE THIS!
Freeking Cheets

I say again:
YOUPOD = YOUSUCK

I STILL haven't had the courtesy of any response from the Seller of this app. despite my several e-mails and requests for help. it now seems that- once you pay- you are on your own- they don't help and won't email you back! This was a great application when it forst came out- now it is dangerous to use.

I've lost ALL of my bookmarks. I checked off the Bookmark function and uploaded them at home. Now I plugged it in at work, clicked on bookmarks and WHAM. ALL of my bookmarks are GONE. I quit youPod and Safari, unplugged my pod and restarted the browser - STILL GONE.

youPod - youSuck!
