Having nearly a full years experience with this sim I can say it is a stable program that is a very good balance between realism and ease of use. It is a sim meaning you have to fly the aircraft, but it is not overly complex as some others are. This isn't an arcade game. Real world physics apply. It does have certain unique quirks, but they aren't hard to deal with. The developer replies to questions and/or problems in a very timely manner and support from the online community is excellent. The mission builder feature and the ease in which textures and custom paintjobs can be added are a definite plus. Online game play is great fun and can easily become addictive. The SF community is diverse as it is colorful. My best advise is to try it. The demo is free, and the price is reasonable.

(My second attempt to post this -- apologies if it shows up twice)

SkyFighters strikes a good balance between realism and ease-of use. You won't kill yourself just trying to take off like you will in some more realistic flight sims, but it's not dumbed down either. SF is a worthy spiritual successor to that old Mac favorite, Hellcats Over the Pacific, with the added advantages of online play and a mission editor. There are a ton of free missions contributed by users, many of which are quite good.

I was originally trepeditious about joining online games, but found the regulars to be a pretty friendly bunch (in the games or in the main online chat site for SkyFighters). Some of them will even design custom paint jobs for you just for the asking. If you identify yourself as a novice they'll generally take it easy on you, but if you join a raging multi-plane battle you can't expect them to keep track of which opponents are which. It's a big jump going from the computer-controlled opponents (which tend to be pretty predictable even at the highest skill setting) to flying against experienced humans, but it's worth the effort.

The game is very stable and well worth the $30 or so. Yes, we'd all like some additional plane types to fly, but those included cover a pretty fair range and allow you to use varying tactics depending on the characteristics of the plane. Give the free demo a shot.
