LaunchBar ReviewSuperb product. - Version: 5.0.2, 11/15/2009 11:56AM PST

When I use other Macs I am lost without this software.

LaunchBar can do what other launchers do but the other stuff is just amazing. I haven't used spotlight directly in nearly two years (which is a blessing) and the ability to jump between locations, folders, programs and projects easily without having to think cannot be replicated easily using another launcher as far as I know.

Superb!

I've been using this for years now, and though I have stuck with ver. 4.3.7 because it seems to be faster on my G3, I can totally recommend it as a must-have. Spend some time going through the documentation and playing around with it and you will be amazed at what it can do: open apps and folders, bookmarks, control iTunes, look up in Google, Amazon, etc., all from a tiny bar. Have tried similar freeware but keep coming back to this. It helps to peer under the hood, though, to really discover all the uses.

LaunchBar CommentaryWhy would you pay for this? - Version: 5.0 beta 6, 2/27/2009 09:07PM PST

The gorgeous Himmelbar from Softbend does all your pull down menus for nothing while Finderpop (now in version 2.0) gives you all the contextual menues and searches you could possibly think of.

Both are quality products and both are free. I can't think of a single reason why Launchbar would be worth giving them up and paying 20 bucks.

Not sure where the previous reviewer is coming from but in my experience, with well over 100,000 documents on my drive, Spotlight is virtually useless. Being able to locate key folders and documents almost instantly, without having to scroll through endless lists is just "expected behaviour" from this fantastic application. Now, with all the other add-ons - access to the Services menu in particular - makes this the very first application I install during a clean system install.

Wouldn't run a Mac without it.

Hey, don't laugh. This isn't just another decrepit one-trick pony. No sir! Actually I own a license to an older version. Stopped using it long ago because Spotlight does everything LaunchBar will do, and just as fast.

The main difference is that Spotlight costs...

...oh, yeah...Spotlight is FREE!

I just started using version 5, since it was just released today... Nice improvements. The clipboard manager is a good addition. I'd been using Copy/Paste Pro and will see if this can substitute.
Other stuff is great, but I really just use the base functionality. The calculator, for instance, is nifty, but I'd rather use pCalc.

I love the stability of LaunchBar. I don't know what the support is like since I've never needed it.

I'm still surprised that a launch utility like this has no hotkey launch ability. Quicksilver does. DragThing does. This is a launcher, right? It's called "Launch"Bar. It will launch applications for sure, but never without several steps. I can open an app with QuickSilver or DragThing with a single key press. If I spend most of my time in 4 or 5 applications, and flipping between them constantly, the single key press saves a lot of time.

Still... this is clearly a 5 star app. It does what it does so well, it's hard to criticize it.

I have already reviewed LaunchBar, and I love the product, but I came across an issue and contacted support. In the first email I got from them they said the issue was with a system library, but, they didn't leave it there. The support person attached an applescript that got around the problem.
Then, about a month later I get a second email from support saying that they found another way fix the problem without applescript, and they showed me how to do it.
So, not only did they not just drop it at "it's Apple's problem, not ours" they continued to work on the problem and found an actual solution, when their first fix worked just fine.
I totally would recommend launchbar, and now that I have had the pleasure of interacting with support, I would recommend it even more so.
