Press Command-Shift-4, then press space, then you can take a screenshot of a window instead of the screen.

Some Uses for Backdrop - Version: 1.3, 1/21/2005 07:19PM PST

Just a few uses from feedback I've gotten the past few months...
For screenshots, Backdrop is most useful for taking full-screen snapshots where you might want a generic background. Some users leave Backdrop open all the time to allow them to focus on only one application (or a few chosen windows) at a time.
Comedy: Take a full screenshot of your desktop. Make alarming changes with an image editing app. & use this picture for Backdrop....... even better if you can sneak this onto someone else's computer
