Product Description:

iODBC stands for Independent Open Database Connectivity. Commonly considered to be specific to Linux or UNIX platforms, iODBC is a truly platform-independent Open Source implementation of ODBC.

The iODBC effort is managed via the iODBC project, http://www.iodbc.org, which is maintained and supported by Openlink Software.

iODBC and ODBC are 100% compatible. Thus, migration of ODBC-compliant applications and drivers across platforms does not require wholesale rewrites.

The iODBC SDKs for the Mac provide support for Cocoa, Carbon, Darwin, and Classic development. Like ODBC on the Windows platform, iODBC comprises the following:

Runtime resources

  • ODBC Drivers -- Simply, Drivers that implement the ODBC API.
  • iODBC Driver Manager -- The Driver Manager is implemented as a Framework under Mac OS X; a Shared Library under Darwin, Linux, UNIX and OpenVMS; and a Code Fragment under Mac OS 9.
  • iODBC Administrator -- iODBC provides the native GUI-based OpenLink ODBC Administrator for Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X. The HTTP-based OpenLink ODBC Administrator is also available for all iODBC-supported client platforms except the Classic Mac OS.

Development resources

  • iODBC SDK -- Used by developers for the development of ODBC-compliant database applications and drivers, the iODBC SDK includes all necessary Header Files and Shared and Static Link Libraries, as well as the library sources.

What's new in this version:

  • The iODBC graphical Administrator component for Mac OS X (Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard) is now released as open-source.
  • The iODBC CFM Bridge for Mac OS X is also released as open-source, facilitating connections from Microsoft Office (Excel/Query).
  • Additionally, windows in the GTK-based administrator are now resizeable alongside other minor bug-fixes.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.5 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.5 PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.4 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.3.9

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X -- precompiled for 10.3.9 and later; can be locally built for 10.1.5 and later
  • 10.3.9-10.4.x download is here
  • Xcode Tools, CodeWarrior, or similar development environment

iODBC Driver Manager, Administrator, SDK Troubleshooting ReportUTF-8 ODBC Compatibility - Version: 3.51.1, 7/29/2004 11:57AM PST

Hi,

actually not a feedback, but a pre-purchase question:

We are an internationally operating company, using a remotely hosted SQL server database to populate our Websites, as well as produce print media by importing table field contentfrom the database tables to DTP software such as QuarkXpress and InDesign. We are migrating to InDesign right now, because of its capability of handling UTF-8 coded text, in order to enable us to produce multilingual (Thai, Turkish, Polish, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, English, Spanish, Arabic etc.) documents. For connecting to the SQL database, we utilize an InDesign-Plugin, InCatalog by em-software, which enables us to connecti live to a SQL database, instead of going with snapshot files (.csv or .txt export of the data). Unfortunatelly, InCatalog does not support UTF-8 coded text to be imported on-line right now, the only option would be to take the detour via snapshot files. Looking deeper into this subject, I meanwhile think, the problem is neither the plug-in, nor InDesign itself (both can handle UTF-8 coded information basically, just not via ODBC connection), but the ODBC driver that goes with InCatalog (Em ODBC 4.0 SS WP Driver, Version: Em ODBC v4.0 SQLServer WP Driver, MacIntosh Version by Susan G. Conger., DataDirect Technologies, Inc.1988-2002)

What we'd like to know now, is if you have any experiences with this kind of problem, if your application/driver might be compatible to any application, as long as Mac OS X based, and -if yes- if there is a try-out version available, so that we can figure out if your solution/driver might be able to solve our problem.

Thanks for your help in advance,
best regards,

IC Corporate
