The LAME encoder is a free, open source product from http://www.mp3dev.org/, packaged by Thalictrum for your convenience.

What's new in this version:

This is the latest stable release of LAME, built as optimized universal binaries. All included executables will run at native speeds on both PowerPC and Intel based Mac OS X machines. PowerPC code is optimized for G5.

Look closely and you see they say it's not just optimized for G4/G5 but a G4 is required. There may be a G3 port of LAME on Fink, but Fink isn't working for me at the moment. If anyone (not to mention Thalictrum) can post a G3 port, I'd appreciate. If I manage to get it from fink or compile the sources from sourceforge, I'll leave another note of course.

This asks for a "Lame Framework" folder in Library.
No such dog.
plus I think this used to put a control panel in Ppanes.
