Product Description:

Backdrop Folders is an addition to the Finder, that was designed to take advantage of Mac OS X 10.3 "Expose" feature.

You probably noticed, for a given kind of work, that you had to go to the same places with the Finder, again and again.

With Backdrop Folders, you can open "views" of your folders at the desktop level and interact with them.

These views remain visible when you reveal the desktop with Exposé, which allows you to pick a file or to do a drag and drop operation in no time, without the hassle of having to switch to the Finder and navigate through your disk hierarchy.

Main features :
  • workspaces
  • drag & drop
  • auto-resizing
  • fully customizable views :
    • display/hide hidden files
    • transparency, colors
    • icon size, text size
    • auto-resize
  • supports Panther's "kernel event notification mechanism" : the views are directly notified by the kernel when a file is created/moved/renamed/deleted. In other words, if you create a file from the Terminal, the view will be in sync immediately.

What's new in this version:

  • New button to go up a level.
  • Changed the close button to a disc.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.3.9

Backdrop Folders ReviewI love it, no problems - Version: 1.3.4, 4/6/2005 01:56PM PST

I love this piece of software. It helps me keep my desktop very organized and get quickly to the folders that I routinely need. I can also put folders to quickly organize things as they accumulate on my desktop. It adds another layer to my productivity with the use expose and makes my multi-button mouse more useful. I think it will also be nice addition to tiger because I'll then have a widget layer and an expose layer.

Backdrop Folders Troubleshooting ReportWas it or wasn't it? - Version: 1.3.3, 2/26/2005 02:29PM PST

I installed the Backdrop Folders Demo in my normally rock solid 1.25Ghz SP MDD and, within a minute of playing with it, the Finder crashed out. On rebooting I found that all of my carefully crafted preferences were totally gone and I was back to the basic Desktop found after an OS Install. Luckily, I'd cloned my Hard Drive to the 2nd Internal HD only yesterday so restarted from that. Backup, backup backup!

Poking around I found that I'd only 44 of the original 300+ prefs in the Preferences Folder. The original Prefs folder had seemingly migrated intact to Users>alangentle>Mail>Documents>Library>Preferences!

So, was it or wasn't it?

Backdrop Folders Commentarygreat but lots of room for improvement. - Version: 1.3, 10/11/2004 08:33AM PST

As someone else mentioned the View's text color has to be customizable. My desktop background on the darker side so the only way to make the text readable would be to use a light View background color which I dislike.

Also, if this thing had some form of collision detection it'd be awesome! Imagine the views dynamically avoiding desktop icons or docking next to another View or even a Finder window.

I already paid for my copy. Hope to see any improvements soon.
