Hijack iT! ReviewYou paid for it , now make it yours. - Version: 2.7, 12/8/2006 10:04PM PST

Yeah, I know you can turn your iTunes purchased protected AAC files into DRM-free MP3s by burning them to an audio disk and re-ripping them as MP3. But that's not as slick as Hijack IT combined with Audio Hijack Pro and also a bit slower. This way you don't need to spend tedious hours fixing track information thats often lost when you do the burn-a-disk workaround.

Yes, you could do something like this with applescript. This is easier and more stable. Face it, jHymn is never going to get updated.

Yes, Hijack IT requires Audio Hijack Pro and Growl. And setting things up isn't something my mother could figure out. But I did set it up and it's worth it for someone who wants his music back.

Here's how it works: Create an iTunes hijack session in Audio Hijack Pro using the desired mp3 compression settings. Make an iTunes playlist of the protected AAC files you want converted to MP3 and then launch Hijack IT. Select the playlist and AHP session you just made in the dropdowns and sit back while your purchased tunes become truly portable.

And you won't regret having Audio Hijack Pro in your toolbox either. Makes you glad you own a Mac. Growl is pretty cool too.

Trust me, this combination works so much better at freeing up songs purchased from the iTunes store than everything else I tried. I'm giving it 5 stars because it saved my library and my sanity.

Hijack iT! Developer NoteRegarding Growler and Contact Information - Version: 2.7, 3/13/2006 07:57AM PST

Our email address has always been avaliable from Versiontracker's "About Actionable Intelligence Software" page. It is also listed at the bottom of our home page.

Unfortunetly, there was a documentation error in version 2.6, which has been corrected in 2.7. Growl is now a prerequisite for Hijack iT!

We are always happy to help our potential users or customers with any problems that they are experiencing.

Hijack iT! ReviewLatest Version Requires Growler - Version: 2.6, 3/5/2006 02:11PM PST

Latest version does not work WITHOUT Growler installed. On launch it asks where to find Growler. iTunes playlists do not show.

And worst of all, cannot quit the app if Growler is not installed as you wind up in an infinite "where's Growler" loop.

Adding insult, ther is no way to contact the devloper directly.

Not ready for prime time. Most defininately not worth $12!

What version is this thing? About box says 1.03 (2.5.5). What does this mean?

It seems as though either the site is down, or the link is wrong. I attempted to download the the file early this morning from the link and received this: <http://web.mac.com/1/homepage404ErrorPage.html>.

Hijack iT! ReviewGreat tool for iTunes and Audio Hijack Pro - Version: 2.5.5, 1/10/2006 12:35PM PST

I recently adquiered Hijack iTunes and since then my life has become a little bit easier.

Hijack iTunes is a very straightforward tool that allows you to record multiple files from iTunes trhough Audio Hijack Pro.

The reason why I consider this program so ingenuos and efficient is because it allows you to quickly select what iTunes playlist you wanna record and what Audio Hijack set-up you wanna use for the recording. You don't have to waste your time going through endless menus and configurations, you click and choose and that's it. You're ready to go! Then, you let Hijack iTunes do the rest. You can record a whole audiobook overnight and when you wake up in the morning you'd find new universal playable files for each one of the original only-playable-in-iTunes files, completely labeled and organized in the destination you previously selected.

There's no doubt Hijack iTunes is worth the money and the support is just great!

I hope the developer keeps improving this amazing tool.

It seems that some here don't understand what Hijack iTunes does. I just paid my registration fee about a month ago and I'm VERY happy I did. Apple's iTunes is cool. Audio Hijack Pro is awesome. Hijack iTunes allows you to get Apple's iTunes and Audio Hijack Pro working as an automated team. I use a Creative MP3 player with my 14 inch iBook. Hijack iTunes lets me automate the conversion of my protected audio files (music, audio books, podcasts, etc.) into MP3 while I sleep! This makes it easy to move these files over to my Creative MP3 player. Hijack iTunes does all this work intelligently. It even transfers all the information about each file over to the new file. Hijack iTunes is great, definitely worth the money. (I'm not connected in any way with the developer. I wrote this review because it seems the software is getting a bad rap from people who don't understand what it does.)

Hijack iT! ReviewWhat It Does - Version: 2.5.1, 9/15/2005 07:51AM PST

Since I was initially flummoxed as to what exactly Hijack iTunes does, I thought I would post this for the benefit of others perhaps so challenged. If all you want to do is re-record an iTunes track in a way not allowed within iTunes and/or add Audio Hijack Pro efx, then AHP by itself will work just fine and Hijack iTunes adds nothing. Likewise, if you are processing several tracks one by one.

So what's Hijack iTunes good for? Well, if you process a playlist with AHP by itself, the result will be one new track comprising all the source tracks in the playlist; using Hijack iTunes keeps the tracks separate and named as before

One more thing, and this should be self-evident, any processing done with AHP plus Hijack iTunes will still run at real time, ie this adds no "magic converter" functionality to AHP. So, bottom line, Hijack iTunes allows you to batch process with AHP, and that's it, eliminating the need to get mired in applescript or maybe automator.

Don't understand your rant. You're opposed to political post but post a political rant yourself just like the others.

Has anyone actually USED this version of this software?

...can be used to review software, not express political opinions and restate...and restate...morally relativist opinions. These days the sheer number of fascist laws is mounting so rapidly, it is no wonder it follows the inverse square rule of lost intellectual prowess and personal morality. How much you wanna bet that every person who attacks this software is practicing some other variation of a "crime?" Things that come to mond are: slander, liable, purjury, use of ilegal or controlled substances, supplying minors with alcohol, driving without a seatbelt, etc?

It would be nice if those who post here limit their comments to software reviews, and keep their support for the RIAA, Hollywood fat cats, Homeland Security and Orrin Hatch's gestapo tactics to themselves. (I wouldn't be surprised if some of the negative comments are being made BY RIAA agents!)
