Product Description:

The Java Embedding Plugin is a utility that allows other web browsers than Apple's Safari to use the most recent versions of Java (1.4.X) on Mac OS X. When used together with an updated version of Mozilla's MRJ Plugin Carbon (included in this distribution), the Java Embedding Plugin's functionality is currently available to recent versions of Mozilla, Firefox and Camino. But in principle any web browser could use one of the Java Embedding Plugin's two APIs to add support for Java 1.4.X.

What's new in this version:

  • The Java Embedding Plugin distro's binaries are now "universal" -- they will work on either older Macs with PPC CPUs or newer ones with Intel CPUs.
  • Changed the MRJ Plugin JEP to accomodate a recent change in Mozilla.org's CAPS security interface -- one that breaks the MRJ Plugin JEP's JavaScript-to-Java LiveConnect support in recent "trunk" nightlies.
  • Fixed a couple of bugs in the JEP that sometimes caused spurious access-violation errors (in the Java console). These problems happened when the JEP tried to load (i.e. to access for the first time) privileged classes and class methods while running in the (relatively non-privileged) security context of a Java applet.
  • Worked around a bug in Apple's JVMs that caused Java ScrollPane objects not to work properly when scrolled -- the content's clipping wasn't updated as it was scrolled, so that "newer" content didn't become visible as it was scrolled into view.
  • Fixed a bug in the JEP that caused an applet's start() method never to be called if it had non-zero HTML "width" and "height", but never became visible (even partly).
  • Fixed a JEP bug that could (under unusual circumstances) cause a crash while using one of the (Japanese) Kotoeri input methods (including Romaji).
  • Fixed a JEP bug that caused Java applet components that had been explicitly disabled (using Component.setEnabled(false)) to be re-enabled.
  • Fixed a JEP bug that, under very unusual circumstances, caused the JEP (and the browser) to hang: The JEP would hang if (in a Carbon-based browser like Firefox) a Java applet popped up a window (e.g. it created and displayed a JFrame object) and called AppletContext.showDocument() from that window.
  • Tightened up an existing fix (for a Cocoa-Carbon interface bug) that itself (rarely) caused odd problems.
  • Worked around a probable Apple bug that (very rarely) caused crashes in Camino.

I don't know if this works or not. Is there a way to test it in Firefox or Camino. I just keep updating it. It's the most annoying thing I keep updated. I always have to open the read me because I forget where it goes and to copy the thang to put in the Terminal to update that date. Dang, you can't think of an easier way. Maybe someone can make an installer for you or a script or something.
