I use MPEG Streamclip [ www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/24055 ] for all my MPEG to DV conversion, which works fine and is FREE..
..So anyone got any idea of what DropDV offers that makes it worth $40 ??

DropDV ReviewDropDV - does it use multiple cpus - Version: 2.0.10, 3/18/2005 08:19PM PST

I have not run any side by side comparisons on DropDV 1.x and 2.x. There does not appear to be any use of multiprocessing on my G4 Dual 1.42 PowerPC.

Listed as a new feature for 2.x, is “Multiprocessor enabled.” I am curries what this means in the MAC world? While an application may be aware of multiprocessors, it is something again to exploit that environment. I have not observed any sign that this is being done. Multiprocessing allows the execution of more than one task at a time.

This application does not warrants a price increase of 100%. Is this code entitled to be called shareware code?

I worked as an Advisory Systems Engineer for 24 years. I wrote code for the operating system. This code runs on over 40 large frame IBM systems. The system is written to run on multiple CPUs. It can dispatch the same code on one or more CPUs. It can subtask and run different code on different CPUs.

DropDV CommentaryThis is a GUI front end for ffmpeg 0.4.8 - Version: 2.0.5, 1/5/2005 05:16AM PST

... and they don't even have the courtesy to acknowledge the fact that they are simply repackaging ffmpeg and charging an ARM and a LEG for the privilege.

You can confirm/discover this for yourself by selecting "Show Package Contents" from the Finder and browsing through the contained directories. Run the app called "ddv_decode" and you will see the following:

ffmpeg version 0.4.8, Copyright (c) 2000-2003 Fabrice Bellard
usage: ffmpeg [[options] -i input_file]... {[options] outfile}...
Hyper fast Audio and Video encoder

Main options:
-L show license
...

Since all this is is a GUI front end for a CLUI and DOESN'T have ANY configurable options you're better and cheaper off (1) using the ffmpeg application directly, (2) checking out one of the other projects at ffmpeg.sourceforge.net, or (3) trying an app called ffmpegX that actually uses ffmpeg effectively at a reasonable ($15) price rather than ripping you off.
