DropDV Commentary- Hmmm - - Version: 2.0.13, 3/15/2006 11:34PM PST

I use MPEG Streamclip [ www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/24055 ] for all my MPEG to DV conversion, which works fine and is FREE..
..So anyone got any idea of what DropDV offers that makes it worth $40 ??

DropDV ReviewDropDV - does it use multiple cpus - Version: 2.0.10, 3/18/2005 08:19PM PST

I have not run any side by side comparisons on DropDV 1.x and 2.x. There does not appear to be any use of multiprocessing on my G4 Dual 1.42 PowerPC.

Listed as a new feature for 2.x, is “Multiprocessor enabled.” I am curries what this means in the MAC world? While an application may be aware of multiprocessors, it is something again to exploit that environment. I have not observed any sign that this is being done. Multiprocessing allows the execution of more than one task at a time.

This application does not warrants a price increase of 100%. Is this code entitled to be called shareware code?

I worked as an Advisory Systems Engineer for 24 years. I wrote code for the operating system. This code runs on over 40 large frame IBM systems. The system is written to run on multiple CPUs. It can dispatch the same code on one or more CPUs. It can subtask and run different code on different CPUs.

DropDV CommentaryThis is a GUI front end for ffmpeg 0.4.8 - Version: 2.0.5, 1/5/2005 05:16AM PST

... and they don't even have the courtesy to acknowledge the fact that they are simply repackaging ffmpeg and charging an ARM and a LEG for the privilege.

You can confirm/discover this for yourself by selecting "Show Package Contents" from the Finder and browsing through the contained directories. Run the app called "ddv_decode" and you will see the following:

ffmpeg version 0.4.8, Copyright (c) 2000-2003 Fabrice Bellard
usage: ffmpeg [[options] -i input_file]... {[options] outfile}...
Hyper fast Audio and Video encoder

Main options:
-L show license
...

Since all this is is a GUI front end for a CLUI and DOESN'T have ANY configurable options you're better and cheaper off (1) using the ffmpeg application directly, (2) checking out one of the other projects at ffmpeg.sourceforge.net, or (3) trying an app called ffmpegX that actually uses ffmpeg effectively at a reasonable ($15) price rather than ripping you off.

Can someone tell me why one should pay $39.99 for this application when "MPEG Streamclip" seems to accomplish the same thing for free?

They raised the price to $39?! What a rip-off. There are other utilities that can do this for free...don't waste your money. Try ffmpeg instead.

this is a much needed tool and it would be great if it worked. unfortunately the audio is still massively out of sync... but that's because the video loses so many frames that everyone's walking around like Charly Chaplin !

Took a muxed mpeg1 file and simultaneously converted it in Toast 605 and DropDV. Results:

1. Toast completed the job in half the time it took DropDV
2. The DropDV version was quite a bit darker than the DV file produced by Toast

DropDV ReviewErrrrr...not very good... - Version: 1.0.3, 6/18/2004 05:20AM PST

Um, I just tried out the trial version. My exported movie was an MP1 from EyeTV. Used DropDV to convert it, but when I play the two versions side-by-side (the original MP1 vs. the DropDV-converted DV stream), I find I've lost quality. Quite a bit of quality. The DV stream is stretched awkwardly, and it's more blocky. Nope, not happy. And not for $20! That's a rip-off.
