Product Description:

Shiira is a web browser based on Web Kit and written in Cocoa. The goal of the Shiira Project is to create a browser that is better and more useful than Safari. All source code used in this software is publicly available.

What's new in this version:

  • The main purpose of 1.0 release is to support Tiger. We fixed various problems working on Tiger.
  • But some new Web Kit features look nice. We implemented them.
  • Web Archive support
  • New Web Kit provides the original Web archiving format \'.webarchive\' which archives resources on a Web page into a file. Shiira also supports this format. You can select saving format from \"File\" -> \"Save as…\" command.
  • Archived file, even by Safari, is available to be opened by Shiira.
  • Display DOM Tree
  • DOM interface for Objective-C is available on new Web Kit! It gives a power to manipulate Web page structure directly.
  • As first step, Shiira supports DOM tree window. From the page source window, you can select DOM tree style.

Shiira has potential: it looks great and has some really nice features, but there are a couple things that remove it from the list of possible candidates for even a backup browser at this point. First off all, the bookmark management system would not work properly for me. It would not properly import and the bookmarks I tried to rearrange ended up vanishing. This in itself is a huge problem. Coupled with the lack of any built-in or add-on based ad blocking and the lack of 1Password support, Shiira isn't usable for me. I'd like to see where this project goes in the future, though...

..and this is a huge, HUGE problem!
I can't evalue this browser that was one of my very preferred ones in the version 1.
