DOSBox CommentaryHow much power does this need? - Version: 0.63, 6/15/2005 03:44PM PST

I'm not really succeeding in getting a smooth emulation. How much power does DosBox really need? I'm on a G4 1.25Ghz/512MB RAM (mac mini), but games like kings quest 6 or prince of persia 2 are running slowely and with a lot of stuttering in the sound. I tried fiddling with the setting of course and reading the documentation, but it seems my machine simply doesn't have enough power. Do you really need a 2+ Ghz G5 to run at a decent speed?

DOSBox CommentaryNo way of entering ":", no mounting... - Version: 0.63, 2/14/2005 07:49AM PST

No way of entering ":", therefore no way to mount a C drive. Spanish hardware keyboard, tryed every keyboard layout, from australian to welsh, from adzerbaidjanish to zimbabwish...
Could someone write a GUI for this? Mac users can't memorize commands, we like point and click and drag and drop... ;o) ...that's why we always used macs and that's why DOS games are cool, because these are nothing else than GUIs!!

DOSBox CommentaryScorch! Yee haw! - Version: 0.63, 11/22/2004 12:43AM PST

daveman2
It really does work great for Scorched Earth. And the real thing is so much more authentic and stable (!) than all the 3D clones I've tried. Who would have ever thought you could play the real scorch on the Mac? BTW you can download scorch here: http://www.classicgaming.com/scorch/. Stuffit won't expand the zip file, but "/usr/bin/unzip" at the command line works like a charm.

DOSBox ReviewPeelgrunt Game of Gammon IV v. 6.4 - Version: 0.62, 10/3/2004 09:53AM PST

grikdog
Wow, I never expected to see my old backgammon game from 1986 run on a Macintosh!

#!/bin/sh

/Users/dave/bin/DOSBox/DosBox.App/Contents/MacOS/DosBox /Users/dave/bin/DOSBox/Peelgrunt/backgmmn.exe

The game executes flawlessly, probably faster than the IBM PC rendered it. I have one caveat -- BACKGMMN.EXE uses a kludge from Seattle to avoid snow on the screen by blitting only during vertical retrace. This seems to cause a low, regular popping noise like dragging a soft stick along a picket fence. Other than that, perfect!

If you are looking to speed up DOSBox even further, please see my article. However, if you want a friendly GUI wrapper, please see Sveinbjorn's Radnor, which incorporates my DOSBox build.
