Don't Buy this if you have an intel Macbook (non pro)

dmdeweyThis is much worse than what Adobe did to the Macromedia products because they've actually improved them a little bit.
I think the only thing that Autodesk did for Sketchbook is replace the Alias logo with their own. A good way to tick someone off is sell them a $200 program and then kill support. Autodesk needs to fix the software or stop selling it altogether.

But.
The price is a bit of a joke, really.

Xidius10 - UNIVERSAL BINARY. =P
1 - In addition to layer opacity, allow us to change the way our layers interact with other layers (much like photoshop). Example: You can set it to "Pin Light", "Subtract", "Overlay", etc.
2 - Layer folders/groups! Right now I am working on a large project to take the app for a spin, and the first thing I noticed is how ENTIRELY out of control the layers are. I have hundreds of them, and there is no way to organize them! @_@
If this isn't fixed then the app will be entirely useless to me.
3 - Another option that would be helpful would be to collapse the layer icons to a smaller size, so we can see more on the screen at a time.
4 - Make the layer opacity window into a drop down menu. Having it as it's own separate window is quite annoying. =\ Another rectification would simply be to have the window close itself if you click anywhere other than the window.
5 - Allow us to disable anti-aliasing for pixel-point accuracy when zoomed in.
6 - Allow us to move selections with the keyboard, 1 pixel at a time (once again) for further accuracy.
7 - Um... That's all I've got for now. =) Keep up the good work!

Really nice app, way too expensive

StormchildThe price, however, is a deal-breaker for me (frankly it's a rip off). There is no way in hell I'm going to drop almost $200 for something this basic. It should be $50 at most. For that reason, I cannot recommend it. If Alias ever gets a clue and prices this more reasonably, I will consider buying it.
Great concept marred by absurd price point

Sure Corel painter and photoshop have more options but Sketchbook Pro is way more responsive and intuitive. I guess the people rating it are more artists than designers.
I think this is an amazing tool for what i do [industrial design]. it takes me minutes to get some concepts and distribute them intrenally.
Alias keep up the great work.

dj_macDoes not even come close to the power of Corel Painter, which I have been using for over ten years.
I admit it does what it says it is supposed to do, but that isn't much.
The pencil tools are just like little airbrushes in Photoshop ... no texture, nothing natural looking about them (in fact I think the pencils are almost exactly the same as the pen brush, or whatever that brush is -- Alias they're called tool tips -- use them!). Mushy, antialiased baloney. And the airbrushes are totally lame compared to Photoshop or Painter. No directional support for airbrush? Hey Alias! Sorry that isn’t airbrushing folks.
What really chaps my @ss is the testimonials on Alias web site. What kind of computer graphic/artist hasn't used painter yet? And if they have, I don't know any who haven't loved it. All of the art created by those artists providing testimonials for Alias, could have done better work had they used Painter. And if they read this hear me ... Painter is not difficult to use, or confusing or complicated. There are many options you can mess with, but the basic tools are simple and easy to use -- as easy or easier than Sketchbook -- and much more flexible.
If you want a kick butt, digital painting and drawing application, Corel Painter is it. The money you spend will quickly be the money you make when you're client see the output.
Note the NUMBER ONE FEATURE of Painter (even Photoshop can't touch) -- the rotating canvas!!!
Only reason you would ever buy Alias SketchBook Pro? You have money to waist on toys for your kids.
Great App!!

rspressThe Airbrush is also top notch. The ballpoint pen is passable but the paintbrush and other tools really need a lot of work. This program is no Corel Painter but in some ways that is good. It's layout is super easy and very intuitive and the tools are all lightning fast....something painter can only dream about.
The bad parts of this program is the lack of depth. They are layers but not many tools to use them effectively. There are no filters, no surface textures and many other features that make painter number one in natural media graphics programs. None of these omissions are real deal killers as sometimes simple is better for a quick and easy sketching and for previsualization.
The real deal killer is the price. At 179.00 list the program is only a little over a hundred less than the much more useful Corel Painter. These are list prices, if you can get painter for less than 299.00 then there is even less of a reason to buy Sketchbook. This program should not be priced more than 59.95, 49.95 would be a better price as far as the feature set is concerned.
Still this program has plenty of potential. With a better toolset and a much lower price Alias could produce a must have program for a graphic designers toolbox!
"My goal is to keep Sketchbook as a standalone and grow the product without degrading the feel and usability of the original releases.
I am aware of the Mac Intel issues and that is one of our key goals moving forward (platforms & OS). I cannot say specifically what will be in the next release yet, but having you on the beta program would be a great help. I've had a huge outpour of support for taking over the project and, honestly, we are really excited about the future of the product."
