Product Description:

Font Book Helper changes the icon that's used to represent the printer or outline font parts of Adobe PostScript Type 1 fonts from Font Book's default gray icon to a red one, visually reminiscent of the red PostScript "A" icon used in OS 9 and prior. This has the effect of breaking up the grayish visual monotony that Font Book introduced, and makes fonts and font types easy to identify even at a quick glance.
See Font Book Helper's product page for additional features.

What's new in this version:

  • Note about OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) compatibility (updated Jan. 19, 2006) : due to a change in AppleScript that Apple made in OS X 10.4 (Tiger), Font Book Helper won't run properly, and upon launch you may get the following error: "Is: /Applications/Font Book.app/Contents/Resources/.helped: No such file or directory (1)". While the main Font Book Helper window will appear after dismissing that error dialog, Font Book Helper won't work properly from that point on. Rather than updating Font Book Helper, I will be rewriting it and incorporating it as a free "Font Icon Helper" feature to my existing Font Finagler shareware application. I hope to have this updated version of Font Finagler available soon. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.3

Additional Requirements:

  • OS X 10.3.x (only)

Font Book Helper CommentaryThis really solved problems for me - Version: 1.0, 10/24/2004 12:13PM PST

If you're converting to OSX from OS9 you'll have problems installing fonts and using them because you don't know which ones are in the right format to install. This program colors bad fonts red and good fonts gray. Just install the gray ones. It's perfect!

Simply put, this 'helper' does exactly what it sets out to do, it helps to visually identify and differentiate PostScript Type 1 fonts from suitcases. Mark's Apple Discussions posting (referenced from the product page) is also a worthwhile read for anyone that used a non-Mac file server (and especially if you used DAVE previously) and is upgrading from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X.
