I find this to be a very stable, reliable and easy-to-use backup program, with good documentation. While it doesn't do clones (duplicates of your hard drive) it is very useful for User folders and/or system and application preferences, Mail, etc, and is therefore an excellent value for someone who is looking for a basic backup. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

iBackup CommentaryVBVB is confusing iBackup with iBackup - Version: 6.6, 2/28/2009 12:58PM PST

One (the one here) is a standalone free Mac backup application. it does not do encryption or compression as far as I know. The other, at ibackup.com, is an online for-a-fee backup service with a Mac helper application. Confusing, to be sure.

iBackup ReviewUnsafe BS - Version: 6.4, 3/20/2008 09:35PM PST

It doesn't do the encrypting I set it to do. Under OSX.5.2. It doesn't do any encrypting at all as far as I could see. Nothing happened. Looks like it copies every file without altering even one bit in them. And everything completely in the clear. So no compressing – i.o.w. no space saving – and no security. That makes the 'backup' useless for secure offline, off premises storage under third party control/access (a buddy's RAID system).

So, bottomline: for me iBackup didn't do ANYTHING it said it would . . . !
iBackup wasted my time.

And since Time Machine also doesn't accomodate encrypted standalone backup files, Carbon Copy Cloner is still the champ here. Let's hear it for old faithfull!!!

The last update gave me problems with Applescript errors, but this one is fine for me with 10.4.11. Good application. I like the way you can use plugins to back up preferences and other files associated with specific programs. The interface is very clear and the program is easy to use. Not for clones though, just User backups. Recommended.

iBackup Commentarylow speed problem - Version: 6.2, 2/25/2008 04:44PM PST

This software is based on rsync unix/linux program and it should not copy existing in the destination "old" untouched files by checking its size and date. In my case in settings I used ditto -rsrc and rsync -ave --delete it would copy over all files again even though there was just minor change in files list. So I ended up waiting for 4,5 hours copying 110G from one external drive to the other external drive (USB2). Isn't it too slow. Can anyone tell me what am I doing wrong.

I use this application for backups directed to an NAS attached to my AEBS. It was simple to setup and ran perfectly each time. The real proof of any backup is in the restore. This works.

iBackup is the first of the simple backup apps to actually work well with Microsoft servers. It live log feature is welcome. The use of normal Unix calls is comfortable.

iBackup ReviewToo confusing. - Version: 6.2, 12/2/2007 09:17PM PST

Setting up backups too confusing. It's faster for me just to copy over the files I want saved to an external drive. Also, I ended up somehow with two Documents folders on the left column.

iBackup ReviewGreat application, slight learning curve - Version: 6.1.1, 11/4/2007 02:48AM PST

There's a small bit of confusion to get over when learning this product : e.g. that individual backups are called "Profiles", and that Profile details are split between the Preferences and also "Profile Settings" under the View menu - couldn't they be in one place?

However adding files and folders to a Profile couldn't be simpler, using the now universal iLife principle of clicking the + button at the bottom of the window and navigating through your folder / file structure. iBackup takes a bit longer to launch now compared to older versions, but the synch itself is fast and problem-free. All your Profiles, no matter what device(s) they are being backed up to, appear in a single drop-down list which makes for great ease of use.

The developer is extremely helpful - when I complained that the 'changes log' which used to be visible in the backup stats window had been sacrificed for backup speed, he added an option to write all changed file details into the log file which can now be located anywhere the user specifies. (I have my log files all written to a single folder, and its alias lives in the Dock).

I mourned the loss of Apple's File Synchronisation in OS X but iBackup - once it has been learned - is a more than adequate replacement.
