What Is Under The Hood?

Under The Hood is a Finder-specific contextual menu plugin that provides a multitude of options for changing attributes of files and folders or groups of files and folders. There is a comprehensive manual for Under The Hood available at:

A brief list of Under The Hoods features follows (please note that almost all operations that imply a single file or folder apply equally well to groups of files or folders):
- Quickly view and/or change the type and creator of files/folders (Under The Hood will remember frequently used types/creator codes).
- Powerful batch rename files/folders capability (with optional regular expression selection preprocessing).
- View and/or change date and time attributes.
- View file sizes and delete data forks, resource forks, or entire files directly (i.e. without moving to the Trash).
- View and/or change file visibility.
- View and/or change file locked attributes.
- Copy full file/folder paths (in a variety of OS formats) to the clipboard.
- Open files with specific (configurable) applications.
- Execute arbitrary shell commands on selected files.
- Execute selected files in the shell with arbitrary arguments without launching the Terminal.
- View file/folder permissions.
- View file/folder node attributes.

For those of you who are familiar with Ittec, any files selected with Ittec (either directly or with "Add to Selection" commands) can be sent directly to Under The Hood for further processing. Together they are a powerful combination!

Baby Ittec - Version: 1.0b1, 5/24/2004 02:05PM PST

At first glance it feels like an Ittec upgrade that never made it - but
it's not mature enough to venture out into the world on it's own.

It seems as if this set of tools would have made a good upgrade
to Ittec and for it's user base, but making it a separate product and
then charging the same price as Ittec retails for, seems a little harsh
by 'balance software'. FileXaminer ($10) has just been upgraded.
It does a lot and costs a lot less.

Some of UTH's tools are useful but I have a couple of CM's already
that do most of the house-hold chores this app does and they are
freeware or cost far less than $25 just like FileXaminer or abracodes
CM's. Which is a pity as I've grown very found of Ittec and balance
software.

A reduction for registered Ittec users would be most welcome as there
is no killer feature that would compel me to buy this at twentyfive bucks.
