HistoryHound ReviewGreat app, very flexible - Version: 1.9.6, 3/18/2009 03:26PM PST

I really enjoy having History Hound at hand. I end up using it a dozen times a week just to find some page I hit but didn't bookmark. The tool integrates so well with my workflow that I don't even think about it until right when I need it, which is perfect.

With the flexible indexing I have History Hound can search archives of NetNewsWire, and even your own webpages, etc (if you're a web developer, this can be nice for finding a snippet you put into a site, etc).

I got a copy for free and tossed it out, that's how useless this was. It was a good idea.
The first thing you have to do is go through all your bookmarks and clean house before running this, if you have littlesnitch running, Goodnight Irene. You'll have so many alert windows that you'll think you're playing a shoot-em-up game. After all that's done, it acts as a slow internet browser, and non of the search results were what I was looking for. It's just extra baggage that you don't need.

This is just my experience with it. I won't attack your comments and reviews, so please don't attack mine.

HistoryHound ReviewAwesome Application! - Version: 1.9.5d4, 6/8/2008 05:14AM PST

I have been using HistoryHound for years, it has worked flawlessly. I have tried HH's competition BrowseBack but it doesn't compare.

So many times I need something and remember that I saw it on the web but of course I can't remember where. So, I jump to HH, enter a word or phrase and HH quickly gives me a list of all the sites that contain the word or phrase according to relevance. HH has saved me many hours searching for old sites I need to visit again.

The developer (St. Clair Software) of HH is awesome, they have great customer support. If you can't find an answer to your question in the forums, he usually answers you within an hour.

Love the company & the products.

HistoryHound ReviewTop ten list! - Version: 1.9.2, 1/13/2008 06:06PM PST

Yes the indexing could be more customizable. Aside from that it seems that the simplest applications are often the most useful. I have thousands of web sites bookmarked and until this app, I had no way of finding anything without tons of guesswork and a lot of wasted time. History Hound is one terrific piece of software and the price was certainly reasonable. It is definitely one of the first applications that I'll reinstall every time I reformat a drive. Aside from paying for it, this is one of those applications where you should email the author and simply say "Thanks!"

HistoryHound ReviewBit the bullet and paid the $20. - Version: 1.9.2, 8/21/2006 10:41AM PST

It was a close call. The couple of times I needed it, it did save me some time and effort, but I found I didn't call on it all that often.

Also, the search process was still a little slow, at least on my computer. In the time History Hound took sorting through all my pages, I could be halfway through a new google search.

But there were those couple of times, on a subject I had been researching over time, that it was a great help getting back to the pages I needed.

A great tool for finding previously visited web pages. Most browsers have history functions that are virtually useless, but HistoryHound works well. I just wish there was an option to turn on indexing when the computer is idle (like Macaroni does for OS X maintenance), since it takes a lot of CPU to perform. Right now, as far as I can tell you can only schedule it for every X minutes.

HistoryHound Reviewnice app, worth the price? - Version: 1.9.1, 2/16/2006 10:05AM PST

Well, my trial ran out and I haven't bought it yet. It's a nice little app that does what any browser should be able to do, but for some reason can't (I think OmniWeb is the only exception, does Firefox have an extension for this?). The problem is that most people, including myself, just don't need it very often. That isn't a dealbreaker, of course, I paid for DiskWarrior and don't use it often either, but that serves a critical function when you do. Whereas in this case, if I remember some vague details it's nice to be able to search my history, but I might be able to find it again with Google without much more effort. I don't have a problem with the developer trying to make some cash, I just haven't decided if it's worth my $20 yet -- it's a close call though.

HistoryHound ReviewLet's say your searching for that web page... - Version: 1.8, 9/18/2005 06:04AM PST

you looked at a month ago with that article on Halliburton. Where the heck was it? Type Halliburton into HistoryHound and viola!-there it is! Or maybe it was Halliburton's stock chart. You type Halliburton and chart and there is the page with the chart. For anyone who needs to go back and find something they looked at a week, a month, a year ago, this is THE program you need. Words, partial words, Boolean searches-it's all here, in an easy to use interface. The developer has given us a 30 day trial period, so if you don't use it in 30 days, you may not need it, but its a free way to find out.
Hint: set the preference so that HistoryHound starts up when you log in, set your Account System Preferences so that it is hidden and HistoryHound runs in the background, silently logging your browser activity until you need it. This is a great program--essential in the web age.

HistoryHound Reviewsupport issues resolved - Version: 1.8, 6/15/2005 07:25AM PST

The developer contacted me directly via iChat and worked it all out. Despite delays caused by being at WWDC, he did respond. For some reason his emails were not getting through. (That's being investigated. :-/

The NNW issue is due to the fact that HH ony indexes NNW stories that are veiwed in the NW builtin browser.

Now that the support issue is resolved, I'll go back to highly recommending this app. I keep it running all the time and find it very useful, and, we now know, supported.
