This was exactly what I was looking for and works perfectly on the new iMac 2.8ghz Intel Duo running OSX 10.5.3.
On these Macs, the startup sound plays through the internal speakers even when you have an external sound system (or headphones) plugged in. Although you can simply mute the iMac before turning it off, I tend to forget. We live in a small apartment and my office is shared with a bedroom so it's handy to be able to turn the computer on quietly. I even replaced my external drive and keyboards to quiter models as well.
