Mercury Commentarywhat about A/V support? - Version: 1708b13, 12/29/2004 08:40PM PST

J Jonah Jamieson
Does anyone know of a mac-friendly IM that supports A/V? My windows friends laugh and won't play any reindeer games with me. :(

Mercury Usage Tipgreat, but there is no way to set up an account - Version: 1707, 9/4/2004 06:31PM PST

It starts up nicely, but the button to sign in is grayed out. There doesn't seem to be a way to tell it what account to log in with. (I have an MSN account).

I am running Mac OS 10.3.4 (or so) and would greatly appreciate a usage tip.

Mercury ReviewThe MSN Client for OS X! PIRIOT - Version: 1703, 5/22/2004 06:27PM PST

Selfinflicted Drama
ive been using this gem for a long time and its still the best and it KEEPS getting better since its in still in deflopment.
The interface is pretty ugly if you compare it to 'real' mac applications but is very functional.
Forget aMSN and micro$ofts real mac client and use this one instead and while your at it submit bugs and suggestions to the authors forums to help make this app even better. located at: http://creativeweb.nl/dmsnforum/

From what i heard their working on webcam and game support!

My 5 stars belong to this

Mercury ReviewNot bad... but not much Mac-oriented. - Version: 1703, 5/14/2004 12:47PM PST

I've been using aMsn <amsn.sourceforge.net> for a while, as so far it's the best alternative to the very limited "official" MSN client for Mac OS X. I decided to give dMSN a try and although it is superior to the "official"client (which is so not a big deal) I found aMsn much easier, as Mac apps should be. As far as features, OK dMsn has some cool things like translation (although Fire <fire.sourceforge.net> does it better) and Screenshot, but some simple things are way complex for the average user:
- Avatars (for a start it should be called just "My Picture"). It's not enabled by default, it's not easy to change (you shoud be able to do it by just clicking the picture) and at the end, unless you select the exact size, the picture will be distorted.
- External Programs. It comes pre configured for Windows so if you click on a URL in a chat window, it won't open it in the default Browser unless you reconfigure the options (which is tricky even for a good Mac user).
Anyway, it's good to see developers providing alternatives when MS leaves non-windows users behind, but everything available is still lacking features, ease of use and stability when compared to the Windows MSN client.

Mercury Reviewthe best out there - Version: 1703, 5/12/2004 05:45PM PST

compared to the M$ client, this is way better, fixes file transfer, adds picture, and a lot of smilies... PLUS it has many many cool features that are NOT hard to use...

yes its a bit buggy, disconnects from time to time, but it stands out for its many many features...

need to improve on looks, mac is all about cool looking and smooth working appas and this is a very square app in that matter, but then again, it IS FREE and I go with it because the MSN from M$ is just so BAD and stupid...

Thanks to the developper and keep the updated coming, you're doing just fine!

pardon me for being obvious..
..but if this is a 'clone' of the msn client, shouldn't it have exactly the same functionality as the msn chat client ??

by definition, a clone would be NO different..
..in which case, what's the point of using this over the msn client ??

obviously, what the maker means is 'msn chat client with more features'

it would be nice if people know what they mean, would actually learn the language they wish to use, actually learn to read and write properly.
