Alsoft MasterJuggler Commentaryfree update - Version: 3.0.4, 7/16/2005 04:36PM PST

what the?
a note this is a free update and works with Tiger. still no auto-activation even with Adobe CS2, I know there are issues with auto-activation though it would be nice to have the option. Font Guardian feature of this is great, though have of Macs required fonts have alerts. Preview or scrolling through mass of fonts is slow.

Alsoft MasterJuggler CommentaryHey ALSOFT, WILL this version work in TIGER? - Version: 3.0.4, 7/16/2005 03:27PM PST

The previous version just did not work in TIGER.

So Alsoft told me to do a terminal edit.

What the?

You guys wrote the programme so get it right.

Sure hope this version works.

I have ALL the other ALSOFT products ( going back into OS 7.5 ) and their programmes are fantistic. Except MasterJuggler in OS X TIGER.

I still recommend this product.

Alsoft MasterJuggler ReviewHard to believe this is from the makers of DiskWarrior - Version: 3.0.3, 4/19/2005 09:14PM PST

No matter how many times I permanently activate some fonts, MasterJuggler sometimes remembers its settings, and other times it forgets them completely. Add to that that it can get extremely slow, and you're left with an expensive program that does not live up to Alsoft's name.
Huge disappointment. I'm using OS X 10.3.9, G4/800, 1GB memory.

Alsoft MasterJuggler CommentaryQuestion... - Version: 3.0.3, 11/13/2004 10:41AM PST

Does MJ offer auto-font-activation like Suitcase does?
I heard a long time ago that it doesn't but it would be a pain to have to load fonts manually everytime, especially when Suitcase will do it for you.

Hi, I just purchased this app about 2 weeks ago to use in our flexo shop. I must say that this thing blows Suitcase out of the water. I know there was not a demo, but i went ahead and took a chance and I must say that so far it has been excelent. It was worth my money!

Alsoft MasterJuggler CommentarySo many cries for a DEMO version... - Version: 3.0.3, 5/25/2004 12:38AM PST

bosskev
and I completely agree. A demo version is a NOT a "would be nice" thing, it is an "absolutely required" thing.

I wrote to Alsoft a few weeks ago, bemoaning (a) the lack of a demo and (b) the woefully lacking information on their Website (e.g., inadequate screen shots of the MasterJuggler interface). After several days, one of the Alsoft team wrote me back, apologizing for the lack of a demo, and then suggesting I could forward all my questions to him and he would try to address my pre-sales concerns. Yeah, sure--as if even a thousand questions and answers could be considered a viable alternative to actually seeing the product in action (not to mention I am simply not going to take the time to try to write up such a list of questions). While i believe he was sincerely trying to help, it was obvious to me that Alsoft just does not get it.

HEY, ALSOFT: allocate some development resources to create a demo version! There is NO WAY IN #@*! anyone in their right mind would pay for an "all sales final" product without knowing what it is they are buying. Do you LIKE losing sales?

Hopefully, if enough of us chime in with our needs for a demo version, Alsoft will realize the sales they are losing/have lost due to their misallocated development resources. In the meantime, I'm going to go over to Insider Software's site, and dowload the 30 DAY TRIAL of their font manager. And if it serves my needs...well, Alsoft, I WANTED to consider your product.

Alsoft MasterJuggler CommentaryFont book? - Version: 3.0.3, 5/20/2004 06:27PM PST

Regarding the comments about Apple's "Font Book", I've tried it and it is quirky in 10.3.3. Font Book hangs up while trying to open certain fonts and that is buggy by anyone's definition. It is not the tool one needs in a studio, a tool that can handle hundreds of fonts. I wish it could but it will not.

Alsoft *must* release a demo or suffer poor sales, no matter how good Master Juggler is; I would not buy it without testing it first and I have not read any professional endorsements as of yet.

Alsoft MasterJuggler CommentaryGood Points, mdouma46, but... - Version: 3.0.3, 5/11/2004 05:40AM PST

The difference with a util like PlusOptimizer (which either did what it did or didn't -- one trick pony) and DiskWarrior is that even if they're not 100 percent effective at their task you can still use them in conjunction with another utility -- follow DiskWarrior with Drive 10 and/or Norton's and/or Apple's Disk Util, that sort of thing. With Font Management it's a different story. If the Font Manager you just bought doesn't work for you, it doesn't work for you -- it will just sit there in your Apps/Utils folder collecting rhetorical dust. KWIM??

That said, it is indeed testimony to the extremely high quality of Alsoft's other products that I would even entertain purchasing without a demo, but for both financial and reasons of principle, I would not. A demo is necessary. That a font manager can handle 450 fonts well is not a test for me -- I manage more than 35,000 faces and need something that can deal with that load. Suitcase manages fairly well, Font Reserve database gets corrupted constantly, and FontAgent positively crawls (though recent betas have improved significantly.) As I said before, I'm not looking to plunk down $90 to try it out. I do not mean to impugn Alsoft in any way, though. I just think they're making a poor decision, *especially* if they want folks to give them a chance when coming out of the gate as late as they are. My $0.02

Alsoft MasterJuggler CommentaryWhile I agree about a demo... - Version: 3.0.3, 5/10/2004 04:50PM PST

I agree a demo would be nice, and would definitely help Alsoft at getting users to even know that MasterJuggler is out there. I see user after user who seem to think that the only font managers out there are Font Reserve and Suitcase. If there were 2 competing programs that can do the same thing, I'd go with a Cocoa one over a Carbon one any day.

I'd look at FontAgent Pro or MasterJuggler before I'd ever look at Suitcase.

I tried Font Reserve and it was in the Trash in under 30 minutes. I know it has some powerful features, but I'd never use them, because I could never get past such a horrible user interface (the way of resizing the upper and lower window sections by having to use 2 separate drag boxes is ridiculous. Use an NSSplitView or whatever the Carbon equivalent would be.)

That said, I would be tempted to buy and trust MasterJuggler solely because of the "Alsoft" name alone. I bought PlusOptimizer from them soon after I got my first Mac, and was always pleased with it. DiskWarrior is absolutely incredible software that has saved my butt on several occasions. I'd reason by analogy to say that MasterJuggler should do the same.
