Product Description:

DOT.TUNES is a fully developed web server application that supports mp3, AAC, aiff, .wav, mpeg, mp4, and .mov files, allowing you to share your iTunes library contents with your friends in other cities, your classmates across the dorm or the coworkers scattered throughout the building.[1] DOT.TUNES contains a custom web server designed specifically to serve the audio tracks from your iTunes at lightning fast speeds. Through seamless integration with your iTunes database, DOT.TUNES easily handles large libraries[2] without missing a beat.

Advanced features like the flash player, file uploads, podcasting and RSS feeds allow your subscribers to easily stay up-to-date with your latest adventures. Whether you're making new music by the hour, doing bad pop karaoke in your living room or working on a video diary of your cat, keeping your friends in the loop is as easy as one click. DOT.TUNES allows you to create your own podcast just like the big boys, except with no server or subscription fees.

It's been said that there are two types of computer users: Those who get this joke and those who don't. Whichever category you fall in, you don't have to worry with DOT.TUNES. You don't have to don't know HTML from http. If you've worked iTunes, you're qualified. Download, installation and setup are that easy and intuitive.

Your computer and its contents are always secure. DOT.TUNES works by reading your iTunes library file and never interferes with the contents of your computer. You choose the listeners you invite to your private network and they only have access to the files that you decide. You choose how much access each person has. Dynamic controls allow for an endless array of possibilities spread out amongst as many users as you wish. And no one comes to the party without your say so.

Playing DJ at an iPod party or trying to settle an argument about song lyrics or has never been easier. As long as you have an internet connection, you can log onto your DOT.TUNES server and get the song you need when you need it. You can browse your collection by playlist, genre, artist, genre, album, composer or designated favorites. And, just like in iTunes, a powerful search function allows you to go through your music by keyword.

If you're really in a crunch, you don't even need a computer. Any web enabled phone, Sony PSP or PDA will do. DOT.TUNES works fine on all browsers.

With DOT.TUNES' shared folder function, you never have to be without a vital piece of information again. Any file of any type can be made available to you via the web. And you never have to worry about the integrity of your computer. Access to the shared folder is controlled by the same protocols as your DOT.TUNES music. You decide who, if anyone, gets in. Ease your mind

What's new in this version:

  • NEW Feature gives you the opportunity at startup to either import your existing database or import new data from your iTunes XML file - even if your iTunes xml file has been updated.

  • Improvements to new Sharing feature to enhance user experience.
  • New Database Engine increases stability and performance

DOT-TUNES ReviewGood but could use work - Version: 4.0.1.16, 2/24/2008 09:51AM PST

Seems to be working well. Has a number of loose ends in the UI, like no way to close the plugin info drawer sticking out of the side of the main window, I can't find any way to give a user admin privileges even though there's a checkbox for it (always grayed out and not mentioned in the documentation), and the "Server Monitor" window doesn't seem to be working at all (doesn't show any server log info), the server messages section of the main window show log-ins but not logouts, the web page control for how many search results to show doesn't seem to work at all. A dialog appears in the publishing process asking for the library and audio files locations which is not in the documentation and has some non-standard interface elements that caused me a few moments of head-scratching.

I find the shameless self-promotion and gaudy logos which are pervasive in the program and the web page it publishes very distasteful and un-Mac-like, right down to the all-caps application name. OK, I'll say it, the whole thing really looks like something from the Windows world. Also be aware that it's not really free. Having more than one user will cost you $20, and having changes to your music library auto-updated in DOT.TUNES (OSX)'s database is $40(!). You even have to go through an annoying process to "validate" your "first free plugin" to publish album artwork. I'd much rather just pay a reasonable fee for a program that does what it should.

MyTunesRSS provides a much nicer look and feel, includes auto-library sync and cover art publishing but is more techie in its setup and does not offer playback in its published web page, otherwise it'd be the clear choice.

DOT-TUNES Developer NoteRE: Syncopator - Version: 4.0.0.68, 10/4/2007 10:12AM PST

DOT-POD (DOT-POD)
Hi there,

Merv, I've just searched my emails and found my reply to you on the 4th of September and again on the 14th...Could your spam filter be blocking us? We recently had trouble with Comcast emails could your ISP be blocking them?

From my email.....

>>I tried the address you sent but it seems that your server was not online when I tested...<<

My email to you offered you a free plugin to increase the number of simultaneous connections incase a slow connection was creating a bottleneck and causing the broken images.

We actually provide awesome customer support, the best in the business. I have never received the level of service as high as we provide. We help anyone configure their router etc even if they haven't purchased. I am told constantly how unique our support is and that they have not received such a high level of support before.

We also offer live support and I'm online with Live Support every day.

Please email and let us know if you would like to continue to resolve your issue or if you would like a refund. If you would like a refund then please email and let us know at team@dottunes.net

DOT-TUNES ReviewGreat idea, but doesn't work properlly -- & cust. svce. nonexistant. - Version: 4.0, 9/21/2007 01:23AM PST

I purchased DOT.iphone, almost 4 weeks ago and followed the instructions to the letter. But it wasn't working properly. Nothing unusual, here -- a MacBook Pro and an iPhone. After double-checking everything, I wrote the developer, and received the following reply (excerpt):

>> I have not received such a report and I'd love to get to the bottom of it. Any chance you could send me your ip address and I'll test from here? <<

So I sent the information requested and waited for a reply, but never heard back. Eleven days later, I sent a friendly follow-up email, requesting an update. No reply. As of today, 3 weeks has passed, and I have yet to hear a peep from the developer.

Again, I *paid* for this software -- not just the free version -- and for nearly 4 weeks, I've been unable to use it. Three weeks with no reply is unacceptable.
