SmartLedger ReviewBest $20 I ever spent - Version: 3.2, 6/14/2009 09:29PM PST

Okay, it was $23 Cdn. Still, it was well worth it.
As a very disorganized person who dreads collecting receipts, when all I had to look forward to was a nightmare in Excel, I started to look for accounting software for Mac. I came across SmartLedger, downloaded it for a trial and was immediately hooked. I had tried trial versions of other programs and all of them gave me headaches.
Sure, it might not be the most aesthetically pleasing program out there, but I'll take functionality over appearance any day. SmartLedger is very easy to use. Setting up the taxes, GST and PST, was a snap. I actually enjoy inputting my data now. I printed out a report to see how that works -- again, very easy. I've also been able to tailor a couple of the functions to my own specific needs (I am both employed and self-employed in the arts).
As a further note, I emailed Alex, the developer, this evening with a couple of questions regarding functions that weren't screaming "Here I am!" at me. Within two hours I'd received a reply with detailed instructions. For such an immediate and attentive response, I say bravo!

SmartLedger ReviewGreat application of college students - Version: 2.6, 3/22/2008 03:37PM PST

This is a great application for students just entering college with their first checkbook, debit card, college issue debit, and credit card. Neither I nor high school thought balancing a checkbook would be hard for the HS graduate, but lack of time and experience got the better of my college freshman son, as he racked up $81 in overdraft fees one weekend.

SmartLedger in hand and a weekend evening to enter his finances was all that was needed to help speed the process of knowing his balances.

This is a well thought out FileMaker Standalone that has paid for itself in unpaid bank fees.

Thanks, MacMerlin Computer Services

SmartLedger ReviewJust What it Claims to Be - Version: 2.4b, 11/27/2007 12:53AM PST

I'm not a number guy. I am also not an advocate of shoe box accounting, but unfortunately I tend to find myself in that position at the end of each year. It is so good to be able to just pull stuff out of that box and enter it as it comes, letting the software sort and collate it instead of me doing the dry run with receipts stacked in date piles before actually entering the data into something I've forgotten how to use.

How to make this application useful is so obvious that I truly almost didn't even bother exploring the sample entries. It doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't. It is a straight forward entry system that creates a clear presentation of my accounts that is useful to me and also to my accountant.

Even if you payed for it, tried it and decided it didn't meet all your needs, or you simply out grew it at some point, hey it's $20. My time is worth more than that, I'm sure yours is too. It has saved me loads of number thinking aggravation I'd rather leave to an accountant, so that I can work on other things I'm much better at. My accountant doesn't expect me to have a pro accounting application or to know how to use it, but does appreciate an organised presentation, (even if basic), which saves them time and me cost. SmartLedger does this for me anyway. This simple app also allows you to usefully print or export your information for your accountant into a variety of formats useful for a number of accounting packages if required.

I am a happy paid up Shareware user.

SmartLedger ReviewPerfect Software! - Version: 2.4, 7/24/2007 01:07PM PST

wenzeldesign
I have been searching for software like this for a LONG time. I was so frustrated with the other accounting software that is available out there. They are all way too complicated and time consuming to learn. I needed something that would be easy to learn and make sense. This software has made such a huge difference in the time I spend doing book work. Thanks a ton for putting the time into developing it!!!!!!!

Filemaker applications just plain suck as does this because it's a Filemaker app. It's UI is chunky and inelegant, functionality is slow and quirky. These are general limitation so every Filemaker application I've ever seen. The developer would dow him/herself some good by moving away from Filemaker.

This is the program we have been looking for for a long time. At last a program that makes sense of all those little receipts, it has saved us hours of manual labour. A great product!!!

VT seems to have miscategorized this. From the developer's page.......

SmartLedger is try-before-you-buy software. You pay $20 to license and keep your own copy.
